I was very intrigued by these and ordered some.
They just came and I hung them outside.

I am a little confused...is it just salt? And sugar?
I guess the sugar and yeast attract the mosquitos and then the salt kills them once they ingest it?
It seems a little Mickey-mouse but we’ll see what happens

Mosquitos love foundation plantings in the home garden they are dark and damp. thats why people that dont have plants have fewer mosquitos around. I heard there was some kind of vitamin you can take that makes you smell bad too them. not sure what it is though. I do know that some people with different blood types dont attract them me I am like Jerry Amos we taste sweet. I guess Nancy taste nasty.lol I would rather taste nasty

      Yep, thats how it works.
Thats how it works - mosquitos are attracted to the yeast & sugar, come in, eat the salt and die.

Sounds good to me...lets see if it works.
Also I wonder if you can DIY the refills since I cant find any online.

Hey Delbert - Did these work for you?
I honestly don't think that they did anything for me. At all.
I'm sure they'll say user error, but there are still plenty of mosquitoes outside

I drop these in my water plant pots and they seems to work great, never see any larva in there. I also chuck some down in my underground drainage around the house.

Going to check out those Spartans though...

The active ingredient in Mosquito Bits is a bacterium called B.t.i. (Bacillus thuringiensis subspecies israelensis) that’s deadly to mosquito larvae but harmless to other living things.

Sorry.... Reviving another old post..... but just found it ;-)

To start... I am a Mosquito Magnet! I was in the center of a crowd estimated at over 100K at the 25th Anniversary Woodstock concert and I STILL was getting bit! I didn't see ANYone else scratching though!
So, If Nancy (Gray Cat) tastes bad to mosquitos, I Definitely am Truffles to them! not saying I taste musty or moldy LOL but I must taste really good to them!

THat Said..... There are two types of Lemon grass commonly sold... One is West Indian (Cymbopogon citratus), has reddish tint on leaves like OCkoiFan's posted pic and while used for cooking, grows well over 3 feet tall, Produces Seeds that WILL Sprout around the yard (in Florida anyway) and it is the one typically sold in Big Box stores to ward off mosquitos.
The Other is East Indian Lemon Grass (Cymbopogon flexuosus) is a Lighter Green, No red Tint, Only grows to about 2 feet and in 10 years, I have never had it produce seeds. It is also the one that is used More often for cooking and is also the one sold in Supermarkets for cooking.
I have had Both but have Never found them to ward off Mosquitos.
I have also sat in a neighbors yard next to his "Citronella" Plant and Constantly rubbed it but Still get bit
Another Neighbor has a small ThermaCell but I can sit with it between my feet and STILL get bit on my legs.
In 40+ years, the only things that seem to have worked are a Fogger that one friend used in his yard and Mosquito Bits.
I also grow Bladderwort in all my water "tubs" and I have not seen any large mosquito larvae... the occasional small one but guessing the bladderwort gets them as they hatch and the Mosquito bits gets them as they grow.

And My guess on those Sugar, Salt and Yeast packs.... My guess is.... Yeast eats Sugar and produces alcohol and CO2. CO2 attracts Mosquitos. Salt slows the growth of yeast and probably helps to extend the life of the package. I would think the Alcohol is what kills the mosquitos.
But I'm no Scientist... I do bake bread though ;-)

There's a ton of research on this lately. You know how they've discovered we have biomes in our digestive system, and they have a huge effect on health? It turns out our skin has biomes as well. And that some people's biomes are less attractive to mosquitos! Which explains why I can be outside all the time and never get bitten, but Darling Bride gets consumed as soon as she steps out the door. Please don't take my word for it. Here's the explanation - the whole podcast is fascinating:

Nope. And foggers, bug zappers, all those things are completely counterproductive. It seems only two things work: mosquito bits, and ponds. Ponds actually reduce the mosquito population, since they attract frogs and dragonflies and all sorts of things that eat mosquitos. When I think of all the times I've put up with citronella smoke while sitting outside, and all for nothing. Alas!

I just read a post on another forum regarding Beauty Berry and how the Leaves have a chemical that is supposed to repel Mosquitos. It's supposed to be stronger than Deet?
      Has anyone tried it?

Have not tried it. Had a bunch of beauty berry growing near my ponds in Houston. Didn't seem to discourage the mosquito population. But, just in case, here's a recipe:

      ***********************

      Ingredients:
      Fresh Beautyberry leaves
      Vodka or other Hard alcohol
      Coconut oil

      Directions:
This recipe is based on proportions so don’t worry about measuring the exact amounts. Pack the fresh leaves tightly into a jar and add alcohol to about half as high as the leaves. Screw a lid on tight, shake for a minute, and then let sit overnight. Pour the leaf and alcohol mixture into a blender and add about 7 times as much coconut oil. Blend well for about 3 minutes. Strain the resulting oil mixture through a jelly straining bag or other mesh container.

The resulting oil mixture can be used as is but to make a salve: pour the oil mixture into a double boiler and add 1 ounce (by weight) of beeswax for every cup of oil mixture. Mix continuously until beeswax is melted and well mixed. Pour into a container and let cool.

      **********************

Cannot vouch for efficacy, but it *does* use vodka!

      Best,

      Bill
