You either need a sieve or a leaf basket and the sieve is easier to maintain and also won't clog as fast as a leaf basket if you ignore checking it a few days.
Well, last year the season got away from me. But I am going to try to get started earlier this year. Going mostly DIY. I hope to find some labor to hire for the dig & blockwork. Maybe subcontract a mason or concrete finisher. Today was step one. Setup and filled the pool to let it start warming up.

A little more progress, Fish relocated, covered with net, shower filter relocated to pool.
old pond drained and liner removed.

Looking good so far.
Well some digging happened this weekend.

these old leaf springs were the steel reinforcement in an old concrete pad we unearthed. That was fun

I didn’t account for the block thickness when digging. and I am in a somewhat constrained space so I am losing a few gallons. It looks like my actual finished dimensions will be closer to 9’x14’x3’ with 2 bottom drains plus a skimmer. The distance between the 2 buildings is 4' wide for the filter pit.
I am going with a Draco Drum RDF to DIY shower. I am guessing I will end up with around 2500-2800 gallons and hope to flow about 4,000 ghp. Should I upsize to 4" bottom drains for less drawdown or keep with 3" to keep solids from settling in pipe? I think the Dracodrum has 2-4" inputs, should I tee the skimmer into one of the lines just before the RDF? I may have time later to post a better drawing but I need to get back to digging while it's still hot out.

Tight quarters for a filter pit. Grade between buildings is about 12" higher than pond height. Makes for an extra foot of digging.
getting grade for the footing or footer established.

Great progress. Looks like nice topsoil all the way to the bottom too.
It's a silt sand mix, so digging isn't bad. I'm just running out of places to put dirt.

That's looking good. You're lucky to have dirt that isn't too hard to dig.
I don't have a Draco but my RDF doesn't like draw down so I'd be tempted to go with the 4"
BD's. I'd be sure to put clean outs on them because with that low flow through the pipes
I think you'll need to clean them out occasionally. Teeing in the skimmer will slow the flow even
more. You'll need ball valves on them to balance the flow.
Boy, that's not much room for the filters... you're sure they'll all fit?
Great looking progress!
Have you considered opening the wall of the shed to include the filter system? It would provide better access to the equipment, winter warmth, and a weatherproof electrical setup.
The shed is full, I will probably close off between the buildings when done. I was originally going to do Zakki sieve. It sure would have fit better. This is getting tight.

Birdman already suggested 4". I was just just not sure about settlement in the lines. 4" it is. Off to the hardware store.
