      Anoxic Filtration LATERITE

I am trying to add additional baskets to my Anoxic Filtration. I know most everyone has their opinion on these baskets, but I am not looking for any
biocenosis discussion on the good/bad or ugly of these baskets and make this thread longer than necessary!

What I am looking for is LATERITE. A ingredient needed for these baskets. It seems there is a world wide shortage, or it is just plain not available.
Petsolutions was the last to have it for sale, but after purchasing some a year ago (it was on back order) they have refunded my money.

I have been reading and reading and found only one article that suggested using IRONITE instead of LATERITE.

I have tried to reach out to the man himself (Kevin Novak) but no response to any email addy of his I have found. He only lives a few miles away from me, maybe I should knock on his door!

Anyway, my question. For those of you that might be able to shed some light on Laterite availability or suggested replacement would be appreciated.

(Misspelled LATORITE, it has been corrected)

Have you been following Novak's youtube videos? Someone noted a week ago that ebay had laterite.

I believe others have successfully used ironite, and Syd Mitchell suggests it also. Mitchell is a big supporter of the anoxic system.

Kevin Novak also recommends Ironite. You use 1/2 as much. Ironite is easy to find.

Thanks for the information and the link. How the heck in all my searches that link did not show up for the information I was looking for!

I have looked at Kevin Novaks youtube videos but I didn't see any mention of Laterite substitute. Also no laterite found on a eBay search either.

Again thanks, I am once again moving forward!

I ran across this article that warns that Ironite contains arsenic. https://www.pccmarkets.com/sound-con...c0503-ironite/

Here is a video by Dr. Novak suggesting alternatives to Laterite. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yINbj43LwL8&t=209s

Interesting reading on google about Ironite. Concentrations and duration of exposure are always the critical details often overlooked when talking about environmental dangers, however, mine tailings are problem areas in several places. Perhaps it better to switch to JBL Aquabasis plus?

My mistake. I will go back and change all my incorrect spelling on this thread. It is still unavailable!

Spelling has been corrected. I thought JBL Aquabasis plus was available only in the UK. But I do see you can order it through Amazon but kinda pricey?

      JBL Aquabasis plus

I can't remember what I paid for laterite but when I compared the cost about a year ago, the JBL Aquabasis plus was less than laterite because you're getting 5 liters of product.

I weighed the bag of JBL Aquabasis that I have and it's 17 lbs including the plastic bag, so product weight is about 16-16.5 lbs. The large boxes of laterite were 55 oz. I'm happy to see it's now available on Amazon. I purchased through Fruugo because laterite was unavailable. Shipping was costly and it took forever to arrive. When I looked at the shipping manifest, it indicated it was shipped from the US to UK or somewhere overseas, then mailed to us in Hawaii.

If you're going to use Ironite, place it it a nylon stocking and tie the ends. Per Kevin Novak, do not rinse before using. I contacted Kevin through his forum about using ironite: http://anoxicfiltrationsystem.blogspot.com/. You may find the forum helpful.

Hi Kathy, thanks for the info. I did go buy a bag of ironite. I only had to complete 5 more baskets to finish my set up.

I can understand the concern of the ironite possibly having traces of arsenic. In a google search I didn't find anyone having issues for their pond using ironite and I am sure if there was, Kevin Novak wouldn't have ironite listed as an alternative?

On a side note I tried looking for fluorite RED and I see petsolutions.com has shut down for at least the year. Too bad.

Fluorite Red is available from Amazon Prime. Cheapest place to get it for me in Singapore, and I will be using it for my experiments... I figure you guys stateside might have better sources.

Laterite is everywhere here as the island has a granite core. Unfortunately I am not sure of the heavy metal content.

What are you guys using for kitty litter replacements? Using oil dri premium absorbent granules here.

I would think Turface, a calcined clay product for baseball fields, would be a good substitute for kitty litter. It was rebranded as Schultz Aquatic Soil years ago for ponds and aquariums, though I don't think that's available anymore. I get 25# bags for about $14. It's fired to a higher temp than kitty litter so it'll last longer. It has a **** high CEC too.

I did not have problem with your spelling on Koiphen. Only for Google search because you can’t find the product you are searching for.

Zaki51 all is good. It was only a typo on this site. My searches on google, and the net I spelled the word correctly. I can give a few excuses why I typed it incorrectly, it was early morning, I was sober, the keyboard, it was dark, FFS (Fat Finger Syndrome)!

And let me add, thank goodness for spell check. Most of my words would be MISPELLED! ;- )

I am using the ironite based anoxic baskets in my quarentine system. It is working as advertised. I followed the directions and put in nylon stockings to contain it.

I am also looking for Laterite.. seems it is still unavailable except for on an indian website (written in English) for quite a bit higher price than advertised anywhere else... and it's sold for an amount of Rupbees.

Would love to use anoxic filter baskets.
