Our tempratue temporarily jumped up to 70f yesterday and the Mutt pond perked up. I sent most of the day working on some temporary holding tanks I will use when I pick up my breeders since my concrete tanks won't be reasdy in time.
Perky Mutt pond.
Temporary holding tanks on the bank of the Mutt pond.
Good job.
Mutts are happy. I think i see a tancho asagi. and you've got your twine up. No flies on you.

Boomer it's got to be the one that's barking some interesting Shusui in the mutt pond would like to see close ups if you ever have the time.
Close ups might happen sometime this summer if I can sein out the pond for sorting. The Shusui are all long fin. They have grown quite a lot since they were put in there though. Probably getting close to 20 inch.
Wasn't sure to call that one a tancho assigi or taunch goshiki. thats the problem with Mutts.

Thought I would post some pictures here of two ponds I had excavated with the intent of being Fry ponds. If spawning nets aren't successful they could also serve as spawning ponds. If water is not to deep I would probably like to attempt to extract the parents after spawning. All in all for my first go-around I will be excited with anything I can get. The square pit in the background of this video is for the concrete tanks and greenhouse. https://youtu.be/QM-8pkphsEk

Looks like a pretty big project getting started. This should be fun to watch.
Hi Matt: I hope I can get enough of it rolling to actually have a spawning to work with trhis summer.
That's one large project it looks very well planned rooting for your success and can't wait to see results by the way just about every one that has done something like this gives the place a name have you thought about giving your dream a name.
Actually yes we have a name. You can find it also in the Pro forum "Finley River Koi" Havn't picked up the breeders yet and so no spawn yet and many nail biting months away from anything to post in the Pro forum. I also think I will name the large grow out pond "Lake Whipoorwill", have allways enjoyed listening to them in the wee hours around our house.
Very happy to hear from you Orlando. Have read through quite a few posts in other threads and recognize your valuable input in many of them.
This is a photo of a female showa I will be picking up later next month. Won't be picking out a male to go with her until I get there to chose from several.

Sounds like am ambitious project no matter what plan you decide to follow. I always liked Koigrl's approach of focusing in on one type of koi, and devoting all of the time and energy to developing a strain that will breed true and be of very high quality. Reminds me of a story I saw on tv a long time ago of a retired surgeon whose only hobby was gardening and who spent his retirement trying to breed new species of iris. He had the scientific backround to understand and apply the genetics involved, and the detail oriented backround to keep detailed records . He was very successful. He wanted to be challenged intellectually, and be very good at one thing rather than average on a lot of things.
Sounds like you have the same choice- breed a lot of koi for the fun of breeding, or specialize and try to develop a really good line similar to Koigrl.
Thank you for posting Steve. I am going to try to stick with just two varieties and produce the best I can. Another reason for the ponds is I am fascinated by "Jumbo" koi. Many people can enjoy high quality koi in they're backyard ponds but not many can grow them to jumbo sizes. Who knows I might even be able to offer grow out service someday.
