      Raising clownfish

Hey guys, just thought I’d share what I’ve been doing for the last year or so. Right now I have regular ocellaris and frostbites breeding. From the frostbites I get frostbite, Wyoming white, snowflake, davinchi, regular, etc. This is a mixture from the two pairs. I have several other pairs that haven’t bred yet but I’m hoping they do soon.

Those are neat. How big are the aquariums are you using? How old are the fry in your pictures?

Those are in 10 gallon aquariums plumbed into a system with a protein skimmer and a K1 moving bed filter.
Those are about 5 months old.
Since you are from Nashville I guess you've heard of Aquatic Critter. I've sold some to them and will probably take these there. I have several other stores in the area wanting them also but I need to ramp up production first.

Mike, I know Aquatic Critter well, and have been doing business with them for about 20 years. You must be in the Nashville area as well since you have sold them some of your fish. Chris is a good guy. I love his store! I am actually in Goodlettsville, just north of Nashville.
I know "Finding Nemo" made clownfish very popular and had even heard that for a while the demand was so great that pet stores had trouble keeping enough in stock. Yours look great!
P.S.- Did you see this thread by Rainblood a few years ago? https://www.koiphen.com/forums/showth...roon-Clownfish

      Thanks guys.

I have been going to AC for probably 20 years also. Chris is a really good guy and always goes out of his way to help us out. I saw your picture on your website and I bet I've ran into you there. You look very familiar. I need to get some plants from you next year.

I actually have 6 lightning maroon clownfish. You can get them for much cheaper now. I got some of mine for around $60. I have 2 pairs and 2 that wouldn't pair up so I had to seperate them. They both turned into females then. I was going to pair them up with something else but I'm thinking about selling them since I'm running out of room.

They are so adorable! I wish I could do a saltwater tank. Maybe if I got rid of my pond and all my freshwater tanks I could, but I'm too attached to even consider that. Lol.
      Lovely fish!

Thanks! Unfortunately the female frostbite clownfish jumped out last week so I won't be having anything but regular ocellaris for a while. I felt sick when I found her on the floor.

I am so sorry to hear that!
I have had two fish jump out before. I found both thankfully in time to save them. One I think my cat terrorized for a while. That sick feeling a person gets when finding a fish on the floor is hard to shake. I hope you will be able to find another to replace her.

So sorry to hear that. I know you were proud to have her. Hopefully you will be able to get another one to try and raise them.

Today I found dead my black snowflake female dead in its tank also. Not sure what happened to her. She has been very healthy and I have been expecting them to breed for a while now. I just can't win it seems. I'm considering putting the two males together and see if I can get a pair out of them. For those of you that don't know, clownfish are born gender neutral and the most dominant one becomes a female and the second most dominant becomes a male. If the female dies then the male can change into a female and the next dominant becomes a male. Once a clownfish is a female it stays a female though.

Thanks, not sure what happened to her. That pair was in a tank hooked to 7 more tanks and everyone else is fine. Water is good but I'm doing water changes now anyway. I have been a little slack on maintenence lately. Water is good besides a little high nitrates but not outrageously high.

      Sounds like a double whammy!
I have heard of gender changing in a few other fish, but do not remember which ones they were. That would be great for you if it happens.
