Got time to play with my microscope again. These pics are from backwashed sludge. I think they are pictures of a couple of different types of copepods. I've seen these before and they are VERY hard to take a picture of because they move SO fast. So I got this idea and I got to play around with PP again. I put in a 2-3 grains for PP on the slide and then dropped my specimen, followed by a cover slip. It's like Armageddon down there - all these moving creatures seen under the microscope seems to be running away from the purple blob, catching up to them, annihilating on contact, and going for more! Now say cheese. The first picture is PP hot (purple), and the second picture is PP spent (brown). Makes one wonder if PP is also good for treating other 'crustaceans.' And I can imagine how PP can make such a mess (organic loading) if the filters are not taken off-line during treatment.

I'm not sure how to figure the concentration of a few grains of PP in your sample, but I bet it's pretty high compared to 3 grams per 1000 gallons.
When I use PP (low concentrations) I barely see a small 'blip' in the NH3 rating indicating the bio barely notices it.

Found this 'crab' again in the sludge of my filter. Sludge looks more green than what appears.

When preparing a pond water sample for microscope it helps to have a centrifuge. Since most of us don’t one, the DIY version is to tie a string to the open end of the test tube sample and spin it around real fast a couple of feet out.

You can then suction up the sample pellet with a drinking straw covered by a fingertip.

I flushed one of my filters a few days ago and collected the effluent in a bucket and let the sludge settle a few minutes. I then took a 10ml syringe to suck a few2-3 mls of that sludge from the bottom. I then did what Rob suggested which was to tie a string to the plunger end and spin it around to centrifuge the heavy stuff to toward the tip of the syringe. Caught some of these big boys under the microscope:

Aeolosoma is a genus of tiny, transparent worms from the class Oligochaeta, which includes earthworms and other segmented worms. They are almost exclusively aquatic and range in length from 1-10 millimeters. These oligochaetes feed on vegetation and water scum, as well as any small organisms unfortunate enough to get hoovered in with the current produced by their mouth cilia.

Thanks for these great photos. Very interesting. Makes you realize how dangerous PP is.

Spring is finally here! Over the last couple of days I've notice a layer grey pond scum accumulating on the surface of the water in the skimmer. Curious, I skimmed that layer and examined it under the microscope. I found strange looking things shaped like sweet potatoes roots with some sort of bulb. The are dark green in colour (not captured in the photo). They are non-motile. Magnified at 400x I don't see any structures inside of them like organelles. Anybody know or attemp to guess what they are? It would really help. I'm thinking they are algae buds or seedlings of some sort. I have no obvious string algae (yet). Start of string algae?

This is so fascinating! I’m loving all the pictures and reading how you all tank your samples. I need to play around more and get more pictures.

Here is some white tufts I scraped off a poor goldfish. I think its epistylis but can also be sap? I added strong saline (salt) solution under the cover slide and watch them shrink and die. I also tried pp, same result - death.
