Creative Zen in Hacienda Heights - Total Koi pond rebuild

We finished rebuilding the koi pond located in Hacienda Heights. We cut out the old concrete floor and wall to enlarge and deepen the pond. We removed the center island and concrete bridges. Installed six 4" bottom drains and two 4" skimmers. We rebar, shotcreted and waterproofed the concrete pond with Xypex. Rebuild the south bridge with redwood and built a new 10x15' redwood deck for viewing lounge. Installed 12 led underwater lights. We discarded the old swimming pool filtration, dug the filter room 4 feet down, ran the entire 4" plumbing under a tunnel and install 2x Profidrum Eco 65/40 and custom made moving bed bio. Reconnect the return to existing four waterfalls and 4 new 2" TPRs, all flow powered bytwo Flowfriend pumps. It took approximately 8 weeks from start to finish. With custom built-in UV light inside the rdf and carbon filter as chlorine removal, the pond now holds 12000 gallons and set to move approximately 25000 gallon per hour. The entire system is capable to handle 30000 gallon per hour.

This was a very challanging project, We had few very difficult moments such as not having enough height clearance for mini excavator to pass through the house roof line - We had to take down the canopy. And when we were digging and sorting out the old plumbing under the filter room, one of us accidently hit a hidden waterline and flooded the room, we turned it to a mud wrestling ring in an instant. This just to name a few.

Although difficult and challanging, We are very proud with what we had accomplished!

      Some filtration room work pictures:

These are what the pond had:

      Our team hard at work

With the amount of concrete we had, there was no way that We could break em all by jackhammer.

      Some plumbing work pictures

      Some tunnel work

And to their final position spaced out accordingly, ready for the rdfs.

After we did the rebar work, we had Rocks and Pumps did the shotcrete for us.

We used 2 layers of xypex concentrate onto the concrete wall and applied surface bonding cement mixed with c-1000 done by hand trowell. Took 3 of us and 11 hours with an hour break for lunch. My arms looked like popeye's arm the next day and were very sore.

After waterproofing was done, the wood bridge and deck was next

Next thing we did was the filtration.

Once the carbon filter was installed, I used the water flow meter until the pond is full and running at full speed. We got it just under 12k gallon

Thats it! I hope you enjoy this post.

      Beautiful job Vince!
That deck that extends over the pond must be the most love destination of the whole house.

Very nice work! Pond look a little shallow to me, why didn't you go deeper?

We deepen the south side, can't do the north side to keep the integrity of the existing rock work. There are limitation to what we can do, our main objective is to increase to flow dynamic, turn over and add more volume, which we did tremendously. Previous filtration was horrible, it had only four bottom drain and all of them were 1-1/2" and clogged. Only the somewhat called skimmer was doing the intake, and waterfall as return.
