My wife and i just built a house, and the lot we purchased had a dug pond shared with the neighbor. The pond is about 50-60 feet in diameter and 7-10 feet deep. It's currently only for runoff, but i plan to do some work to get it up and running. I have aquarium experience, but this will be my first pond. We finally thawed, so here are a couple pics. The first pic is from a raised ares on the NW side of the pond, facing the neighbor. The second is a little further back from the same area, and the third is from the SW side of the pond. You can see the raised area on the left side of the picture.

Here is what the pond looks like pumped down in anticipation for tonight's rain. You can also see how many leaves I'm dealing with. My main project (besides an Aerator) is to install an overflow so we can keep a more constant level. I'll have to install a sump with a pump to get the overflow to the curb ditch/rain garden.
As far as the leaves, should i try to remove them or just let them be? If so, any idea as to the best way?

The primary function of the pond is water retention/runoff control. Second is a landscape feature/water garden. Third would be a home for some fish to add interest. There are already frogs, salamanders, newts, turtles, and everything else that comes with a pond in a wooded setting. It definitely wouldn't be a dedicated koi pond, but a pond with koi in it. Been dealing with spring clean up in the yard lately, hopefully can start working on adding an overflow soon!
