Yes, in the last 3 seasons I've done a spawn, I've been surprised at the number of imbalance defects. One year, the emphasis may be on crooked tails/backs. Another year, it may seem that crooked mouths/heads are more common. Mixed in there will be misshapen gills and flat faces (short noses). Typically, I can cull a solid majority just on these type of defects, though some of the more subtle imbalances may not not noticeable until they get up to about 2".

Those are some good looking fry by the way. Thanks for the pictures.

Defects are common and to be expected, these are natures losers and is worthwhile getting them out of the way early. I don't normally use chemicals but two years ago (because of extreme hot weather) I dosed a spawn with malachite green and ended up with a massive amount of deformed fry which I attribute to this chemical. Other poor water issues will also contribute to the deformity ratio. Steve you have a lovely hand but your koi will look much better in a blue bowl.
      Cheers

      Thanks Guy's,
Yeh seem to be ok at the moment unfortunately i didn't cull down quick enough so i think I've stunted there growth, but in saying that I've always struggled to get good size on quickly. Will keep updated as we go.

Good point. I suppose with the underlying dark tone, that could be a goshiki (not sure).

The time I crossed soragoi and goshiki, I got several goshiki and what some might call sumi goshiki (goshiki with black spots like a sanke). Anyway, they all looked a lot like kohaku and sanke when they were young, and they darkened up when they were about a year and a half old.

You have a very good looking group with bold solid patches and good white. The metallic shine from the kin showa linage is really coming through on a lot of these. You might consider separating them into two size groups until the little ones can catch up some.

      Thanks Matt,

Yeh i guess time will tell, the metallic on these koi is about 85-90% of the fish the tail don't have strong metallic on any of them which is disappointing, an 80% of the koi are Metallic, I will take out the tobi's shortly just haven't got room anywhere as yet an am currently rebuilding a pond an didn't want to cull cause they look ok.
      But will keep updating Cheers

How did these fish turn out? Was it successful as far as what you wanted? Beautiful fry.

      Hi Hope,

Unfortunately i had some sort of parasite go through an wiped them all our so don't know how i would have gone with these. Realistically i think it was a waste, better to get koromo ( ai goromo or budo goromo ) an put them together instead of starting from scratch as i did.
