      Tree ID

Can anyone tell me what type of tree this is and what is wrong with it, besides being ugly. I am looking to let my 12 year old son start doing some Bonsai and thought he might start with this.

It doesn't do well on out patio as it get's full Texas sun all day. I have moved it and plan on repotting but interested in what you think it is and what is happening .

It's a yew - have you got it garden soil?
Suggest repotting in good bonsai, free draining mix, water regularly, but don't let it dry out.

Thanks all. It was put in regular potting soil as it hasn't had the roots cared for yet. I have had no luck with Bonsai potting mixes as they seem to allow drying out way too fast in our Texas heat and my lack of daily watering. My plan was to re-pot and let it get established and than try to work it into Bonsai. I have moved it out of direct Sun and will see if I can come up with a better soil mixture for our area. I think the family is going to join a Bonsai club soon.

If your in a very hot area, tailor your potting mix to suit your climate and lifestyle.
Instead of using all bonsai mix, which as you say is very free draining, try using say 50:50 mix of bonsai soil and potting compost.
It doesn't have to be 50:50, you could change the ratio to suit. It may help in moisture retention.
Also you could add a percentage of low dust cat litter (it absorbs moisture)
      Good luck.

IN Oklahoma we plant Yews on the North side of the house so I suggest some shade for yours. Also I good spray ever so often for pests.

95 degrees today and after working in the yard all day yesterday I am spent! I went to the Nursery to see if we could find something for my boy to start with and there wasn't much to buy. I guess they know there market pretty good and only a fool would be out buying Bonsai plants at this time of year. I will take your suggestion and do a 50/50 mix to see what happens. Should I wait until spring or just go for it now?

BTW, Nice Yew's! and thanks for sharing.

Clean out the dead material in your tree, and repot.
Do not leave in direct sunlight, and keep it moist - don't let it dry out.
      Good luck

So I haven't repotted but the move out of direct sun has done it wonders! I took pictures of it to Austin Bonsai Club and they suggested it wasn't a Yew, but I can't remember the name they said it was. They said it isn't meant for our zone and good luck keeping it alive. I have since purchased and received some free plants for future works.

Looks kinda like a Crytomeria japonica of some type. I wouldn't know the exact variety, but there are several kinds used in bonsai. Here's a Cryptomeria j. "Tansu".

You're welcome! I recognized it from your picture because it looked a lot like the one I killed, lol! I bought a few 3" pots of some baby ones, and missed watering on a hot afternoon. Mine looked worse than yours, one died, two are recovering. I think they like cooler, moister climates than my hot CA summers. Better luck with yours!

I haven't successfully grown any bonsai down here either. But I do have a Jade plant with a small trunk on it coming mail order that I'm going to try.

Barbj-I am originally from Livermore CA and can tell you it's slightly hotter here in Austin. lol. For how many horror stories I have heard about this plant, I am surprised with it's effort to live on! I am determined to make it into a Bonsai but we will see where that goes.
Darlene- I think that is a good start. My son picked up a few of those to begin with as well.
