      DIY Floating Plant Islands

I discovered a simple way to protect my floating plants from being ravaged by the Koi. Maybe its common practice but its sure saved me from losing my floating plant stock. You can leave the islands free floating or attached them to and anchor point on the sides or derictly beow with some not degradable string. free floating not a great idea if you have water fall or above water supply outlet.
      You need:
water plant basket of the shape you desire ( its important that it has a structural lip
1/2 backing rod ( tubular foam they use to full gaps before caulking) see picture.
A wee bit of aquarium grade silicone.

Cut the backing rod into pieces at will fit inbetwen the structural ribs that strengthen the rim of the plant basket. dab a little silicone ( very little) on the backing rod strips. press them inder the rim. they will hold on there own very well. you almsot dont need the silcone but the fish will pull them free. Let dry and float you basket where every you would like!

It was raining horribly when I took the pics and the plants are in fall regression mode. But you get the idea :o)

hmmm, line it with plastic, put some neutral density media in and a floating basket could grow small lotus, there's a thought

      Variation

Another variation to use with the baskets I made was since it was 3 feet deep a I rigged parachute cord to 4 corners of square water plant basket connected to chain for height adjustment to the hanging bracket. Tt keep the plants high so the koi dont dig them out. But racoons some time peruse in them. Since every pond is constructed different it might take some innovation for the hanger. This was good for the Irises and the arrowheads, rush and other stalky water plants.
I top the soil with 2 to 3 inch rivers stones.
