They spawned - My first fry journal!

....while I was away from home SO when I got back at 9:30pm I'm greeted by copious amounts of foam and a handful of uneaten eggs! There were more in the filter socks than SPAWN MOPS!! Since I wasn't home a lot look fuzzy and some are just white but I have 2 tanks full of them with airstones going so fingers crossed for *maybe* a handful of fry in a few days time.

Tomorrow will be the day of many waterchanges

Hi Stacy, congratulations! Everyone are so busy this month. Roger, Dragonfly and Midorigoi documented spawning activities. Now we got to hope and pray they hatch. Good luck to ya.........

Yea!! I'm so mad I missed the act! Most of the eggs on the mops had been nibbled away, but I'm afraid to flush my settling tanks because they're probably FULL of them...later I'll go out with a strainer over the drain and see if I can catch any stragglers. I just want to raise a few babies as I've never had koi fry before, only goldies

Stacy, the males will be ready in two weeks if you have a female that didn't spawn yet. You can plan a dark moon spawn or you can wait for another full moon spawn. Also, if you have a female that dropped her eggs, she will be ready in 3 months to spawn again. Furthermore, these spawns don't have to occur in a large body of water. One advantage of a contained unit is you can trigger their spawning behavior with smaller amount of water. Please note that Roger and Dragonfly were both concerned about their planned spawn. They both had to trigger the activity with a 50% water change.

well done ! yes like Roger said you don't need a large tank I spawn in 4ft x 24inch x 24 inch with small koi at 12inches long ! as I heat and drop a trigger by ten degrees !,next morning they go for it !,knock out and pan spawn = easy and you select males so you can have a line in no time 9 months !.
so you can line breed quicker to get a top result .

They must have done the act as soon as I left the other day, because this morning I woke up to FRY! ....And an ammonia reading on the tank , so after scrambling around with waterchanges I'm now gathering them all up (23 so far) and transferring them to better quarters. The mops were covered in dead eggs so I need to get them all out to stop the water from fouling.

BUT for a first spawn...I'm glad I at least have a couple They are a mix of dark and light, and only one has a deformity (kinked tail).

The final count is: 46 Ok it's not a lot but a nice manageable number for my first koi spawning ever! There are light, dark, and in between colors!
      THE PARTICIPANTS:
Males - kikokuryu, dark chagoi, kohaku, kumonryu
Females - kikokuryu, (possibly) light chagoi, shusui
There are some showa and gr kohaku also in the pond but I think they're way too small for spawning.

Yea!! I'm super excited...NEVER had koi fry before...so this is a practice run till I do my planned ochiba spawn!
I'm guessing, that most likely, those light colored ones are gonna be kohaku as I have no other white-based fish in my spawn. Unless shusui start out light? A couple are free swimming already! Offered some food but I have them in green water so lots of microscopic goodies already, I even saw a few copepods swimming around.

Update! They are all now free swimming, and eating! Feeding on green water buggies like copepods and water fleas, probably rotifers, and I have brine shrimp hatching for use tomorrow NO petstores around here sold eggs so I had to go on a quest and drive 2 hours just to get some for the little guys lol.

Pix below, you can clearly see the dark fry and the light-almost clear ones side by side along with the fry containment unit being flown thru by a 20g long. It's easier to feed them this way with so few fry, but once they get started they will move on to the big tank.

Culled 2 deformed ones yesterday they went to the bettas.. one was overly stumpy looking and the other was teeny and couldn't swim upright. BUT the others are doing fantastic!! There are some bigger ones and smaller ones but everyone is eating and I can see growth for sure.. what color do shusui babies start out? I'm thinking the yellow/white ones are either kohaku or shusui.
