You have some beautiful fish. The Goshiki and the Asagi are my fav's, but they all look wonderful. Very nice!
Love the pic's.
Russell,
All of these pictures are from the Nikon, but I haven't had a chance to use the polarizing filter yet. I hope the pictures will get even better. I will post some when I get them.
Nancy
Pam,
The Goshiki and Asagi as well as many of the others are from Russell.
The Asagi was a skinny little thing when I got her. I think Tosai. She now has a scar on one shoulder, but she is still one of my favorites also.
Nancy
Thanks for sharing your pics!
My dream pond
All of the butterfly koi except the Hi Utsuri, Sanke, and Kohaku, and 2 Goshiki raised here.
Many of the other koi also raised here. Most of them are from a spawn that occured the day after I put koi in this pond. The gosanke, goshiki, asagi, and utsuri and hi utsuri were bought.

Looks great! That is some feat covering that big of a pond. Any outside pics?

I originally planned to remove the metal frame every year. but my son and husband would have to do the heavy work of removing it and once you set these frames up they tend to lock in place and are hard to separate. So I leave up the frame and remove the plastic when it gets hot.
The plastic is fairly easy to pull over and then we take a strip and screw it to a board at the bottom. I don't have a picture of the outside, but it looks like a regular hoop greenhouse covered with plastic on the outside. The frame is a little bent though, because a tree fell on it during the last hurricane, but it did let the tree sit down gently on the corner of the house, so we had minimal damage there.

amazing how sturdy the metal frames are, eh?

I'm not at all bored by the pictures. Love them!
beautiful herd of koi...when you play with the polarizing lens..it only removes the reflections off of the water on a sunny day, it willo be 2 lens in one, and you rotate the outer lens to increase the effect....good luck
Bump.
You asked about my koi. Here are some pictures from winter 2013 in pond covered with greenhouse for the winter. I also have other ponds and tanks.
Nancy
I cover it every fall before the leaves start to fall. It also is a flow though system, since all the water from our geotherm heating and cooling system runs through it. The water keeps it cooler in summer and warmer in the winter. Even plants in there stay green all winter.
I want to plant the edges with something that grows in a zone further south, maybe a low growing latana and something else slightly more tropical, maybe some of the evergreen hibiscus that grow further south.
It also maintains with no filtration. I used to have filters on it but discovered they are not needed unless I want to keep the water more clear. It may be the only pond I can keep as I get older, since it requires 0 maintenance, except opening the bottom drain to suck debris/sediment out and down the hill into the woods.
Nancy
Some cracking Koi they are a credit to you.
What filter systems are you using please, keeping all those koi heathy it must be a good system you use.
Dolan,
For the first few years I had a vortex with matala mats, then a stock tank filled with brushes and finer matala mats, a very small shower fed from a underwater open foam box filter, and a UV light, and the waterfall was always running. The water was pretty clear with all that.
We have trees on 2 sides of this pond but any leaves, acorns, and sediment were sucked out by opening the 2 four inch bottom drains, and went down the hill into the woods.
When we changed our aircondition and heating system to a geotherm unit that functions by using ground water from a well, I decided to run the discharge water into this 17,000 gallon pond. We keep our house at about 72 F degrees year round. There are very few days of the year that this unit does not run at least part of the day. Most days it runs 2000 to 5000 gallons water (maybe more when extremely hot or cold) into this pond.
One day when cleaning the filters it got late and I was working the next day and I did not finish and turn the filters back on. I tested the water the next several days and it was 0 for ammonia and nitrite. I never turned the filters back on, the water always has 0 ammonia and nitrite, low nitrate. They only time it may have an ammonia spike is if I have a large spawning event and it did the same even when I had filters.
So this pond has been running for years now with absolutely NO FILTRATION. The large papyrus may assist in water quality and I am a little reluctant to remove them.
At my age it is wonderful to have a no maintenance pond. When I was younger, I would work all day and then sometimes would be out at the ponds at 10 PM cleaning filters. I simply can't do that anymore.
