In searching for DIY shower ideas I came across this. I'm planning on making one for indoor use, inline right after a S&G filter which should output about 2,000 GPH. Apparently the rule of thumb for a shower is 2,000 GPH per square foot of tray surface area. 2-3" feather stone will be my media and I plan on spacing a few trays about like the picture here. My question is what would be a good depth of the feather stone in each tray if they're around 12x12" wide? This person's trays are about 26"x14" and 10" tall and each appears to only have a few inches of lava rock. Just unsure how much splashing and crashing occurs in a deeper bed of media!

I build mins so I have at least a few inches from where the water comes out and the top of the media is. If this is for indoors, I would suggest home depot bins, will cut down on some of the splashing. With an open design like the picture, you will have a wet area all around the shower.

Been ponding for a while, with lots of successes, and lots of failures.

Thanks much Fishmover. I better close down the opening between bins and/or get taller ones like you suggest. I do plan on having the shower suspended over the pond but close to the edge.

But I'm still wondering about the depth of the actual media in the bins. There must be a tradeoff between lots of media vs. air space for the streams of water?!! Good thing is it's easy to play with the ratio.

YOu want some space from where water comes out and where it touches the media, this pulls in the oxygen. It does not have to be huge though, just a couple to a few inches will do the trick. You can also use home depot bins that have a lid on them, that is what I currently do, helps with the water splashing out significantly.

My shower containers (on the left) fit together pretty tightly because it sits right against the house siding and I didn't want
to have it get damaged by the water. I've never had an issue with air/gas exchange.

I filled mine up pretty full and it has worked well. Each box is about 48" long x 15" wide x 11" deep, so the media is about
10" deep in 2 of the containers and about 5" deep in the bottom one. The top one is empty and only distributes the water.

Thanks for sharing that ICU2! What kind of GPH do you have going over such a large surface area?

My shower setup is the same and it's been running for over two years. At some point, does the lava rock need changed out? It hasn't been touched.

Mine uses feather rock but I think a lot of people used lava rock before feather rock and ceramic medias became
popular, and I think if the water is pre-filtered well it can run for many years without maintenance or being changed
at all. My feather rock is going on 10 years and I've checked on it a couple times but that is the extent of its care.
