Monte's lower pond Redo....It had to happen.

Just to recap in case you never read the first thread.

My first step from a water feature to koi pond did not go well.

I had read alot but very little actual experience. Don't believe everything you read!

The more I learn the less I knew cannot be understated. Also I would add I did not have enough knowledge to even know the right questions.

I did a few road trips, talked on the phone and reread most of the books.

Finally I might have it right or close. You decide.

When starting a project like this it is always good to have your own gravel pit.

This is the new 4" skimmer line. A far cry from the old 2" line.

The new filter pit is in the back ground. But that is another thread for a diffrent day.

The other trench is the bottom drain and tpr/gpr lines and has been partially back filled already.

All the lines were run "wild" to the edge of the existing pond in hopes of a faster turn around time.

This is the other end of the lines entering the filter pit. These concrete cells were filled after the lines were run through them.

They include domestic water, waste lines. air for bottom drains, tpr/gpr and down spout run off. The four inch lines are down below.

This is the other side of that wall inside of the filter pit. Already for some components.

All that water goes to Birdman moving bed filters. Then back on individual tpr/gpr lines.

In case you have not seen a Birdman DIY filter.

Yes, I need a water change (DOC's/Foam on the surface).

Yes, I have seen Ethan's foam fractioner. Trying to work something in here. Could not seem to figure out a price on shipping Stephen's garage sale one out here.

When redigging a pond....... What do you do with all the fish?

Why you drive down to visit Steve and Linda's and come home with their retail tanks, filters and pumps.

Then you add a seive and a bead filter. (Behind the tulips and white tree).

This is about a 1700 gallon system. Three fish were added May 1 and all were in the tanks by July. When the actual digging began.

Time to bring in the equipment. The waterfall is already broke down and the weir is on the plant shelf. I wanted to keep the pond running as long as possible.

The filter house was lifted off the pad exposing the system.

I began forming a ramp Egiptian style. Notice it is wye shaped. This is because I cannot push dirt twards the old pond's wall until it is empty.

So the dirt has to be dug with the backhoe and swung over to the right side of the ramp. Then it can be loaded with the front and hauled out of the hole.

After getting down to the clay I had to lay down some quarry spalts (3-4" irregular rock).

This is because the tractor was slipping in four wheel drive.

Not just because we got 3 1/2" of rain.

Of course when a little creek formed in my ramp I was worried, as there is a yard hydrant supply line running about there to the back of the property.

So of course it has to be dug up and checked out.

You can see why the entry ramp to the new pond could not be any longer/deeper.

Althought the picture says I have a leak. NOT TRUE

It is actually the rock in the supply lines trench acting as a French drain. So most of the back of the property is draining into my new hole.

Atleast I did not have to repair a leak.

After about 16' of topsoil. The front end bucket cannot dig any farther down.

So again the back hoe has to loosen everything.
