Pictures are difficult to judge by but I was hoping it would still portray proportions well. With age come changes in body style/ bone structure but I don't think you would find a shape like this on a Tosai. This is why it can be so hard to pick future Koi. This Showa was Nisai at the time and, I think, 20".
"Nice fish..Thanks for sharing"

The point of the thread was to point out something about the standards that the Japanese have for their Koi. This is something most never see and I wanted people to post their impressions. It's a simple thing and was not really intended to be anything else. The plan was then to further discuss what to look for in younger Koi.
I'd like to see a before and after on a fish so it confirms what we're suppose to look for.
Thanks Russell... the "picture effect" does distort things sometimes but that was a very nice showa....and the second pic did show that the other things I saw in the first pic were just illusions...
Hopefully you will continue this thread and move on to the discussion on what to look for when buying younger koi .... I am very interested in this topic
I'd like to see the discussion on the what to look for in younger koi
Can you talk about bone structure?
I've read some people critique a koi and say "Based on the frame, it'll grow into a honker."
What exactly are they looking at? Can you please explain?
These are all indicators that I have read indicating a koi will grow "big":
-large mouth
-large fins
-large shoulders
-large frame
-thick odome
-big hump
Now, I know big parents = big offspring, but I'm not sure how many dealers/hobbyists know what the parents look like, etc...
