      Austin's Pond Build 2010

Well, the construction has begun after a few years of waiting, planning, and saving. Below are the plans of my koi pond followed by pictures. I will be consulting Steve with the construction of the pond. Please check in from time to time and see the progress!

      Cheers,
      Austin

Looking good Austin, don't forget a UV. The easiest and cheapest way is using the drop in Savio UV in one of my Savio UV adapters on the outlet of your S/G filter. PM me if you need pictures.

LOL @ "is it done yet?"

Great start! (more than I've done!) Do you think the Palm in the pic will be "in the way" of construction? Are you leaving it or removing it?

Thanks guys! LOL, the heat and humidity is a killer. I think I may resort to a small backhoe due to all the rocks and clay. But for now, I still plan on digging it all by hand. I may have to raise the pond up instead of digging so deeply.

Steve: Thanks for pointing out the UV sterilizer. I forgot about that. May have to get that later though depending on the budget.

Mariam: I plan on leaving the Butia capitata in place. My wife loves the palm, and they are quite rare growing here in Arkansas (they need winter protection sometimes). I'm sure I will set it back some with the root disturbance, but it will make the pond look like the tropics!

      Design Considerations:

      1.Budget
      2. Filtration rate, turn over at least once per hour.
      3. Shade pond.
      4. 4" drain if possible
      5. Relate the number of proposed 30" koi to pond size-min. 500 gallons per koi.
      6. As mentioned, include UV after filtration.
      7. Filtration-Prefiltration (skimmer/screens), Bio filtration, UV.
      8. Circulation-tpr's, circulate for exercise of koi and moving settled waste to btm drain and eliminating dead spots.
      9. Aeration-Btm drain or some other source.
      10. Calc pump needs-Steve will help.
      11. Access to pipping for repairs as needed.
      12. Refill lines-water changes and dispossal.
      13. Make sure nothing can drain into the pond.
These are just some basics-linning and pond shell is up to you.
A few thoughts that come to mind.

i was looking at the pic and see the water fall shooting water to the skimmer is it going to be a straight shot, or off set? reason i was asking you might get dead spots. but i could be all wrong. Do you have a top view drawing?

Farne230: Thanks for the other considerations. Those seem like things that new pond builders may not even think about.

Dusty: I'm thinking maybe put a Y in the PVC leading to the waterfall to spread out the water throughout the pond surface. Thoughts?

I accomplished a lot today...dug down one foot in about half of the pond area. Rocks and heavy clay are making the process harder than it should be.

There is a heat advisory for heat index reading of 105 to 110*F all week with a hot high over the area. Is it even worth digging the pond in this kind of weather???

With a backhoe, yes. The money I spent for a backhoe definitely outweighed the money I would have spent in medical bills and whatever frustration is worth.

      I can't relate...
I read a short time ago it's been warmer in Alaska than Washington State...
Honestly, like Sworley said... not worth the medical bills. Take your time. Enjoy.

i am not sure on the ES2500 pump, might suggest something a tad bigger,

2 3" bottom drains, 2 TPRs, 1 GPR, 1 Skimmer, 1 Waterfall. below diagram would work out much much better for you!

also pending on pump you go with, you will either need a leaf basket pot or priming pot if the pump does not have on built into it. between the sieve and the pump.

say 1.5" = TPRs and 2" for the GPR

below diagram, is assuming the skimmer you are going wtih, has a leaf basket inside of it.

      ===================
i suppose you could run skimmer to sieve, and forget about the leaf basket pot or priming pot all together. and go with a skimmer that has nothing in it. and is gravity flowed back to the sieve, along with the 2 bottom drains.

Thanks for the motivation. I went out digging around 6 pm tonight and got a lot done in a short amount of time. I may be getting the hang of digging in clay and rocks.

I appreciate the drawing, Boggen. I had not thought of some of it. I'll see what I can incorporate in given the budget.

Well, it's been close to 100*F for the last week here in Little Rock with high humidity. We've had over 20 days of above normal temps. I had to take a break from the pond dig and work on the rent house since our current renters have moved out. After painting the entire inside, patching up walls, cleaning everything, and lots of other stuff, we are done with that now. The new renters are moving in today. A cold front is supposed to bring a little relief from the heat. Highs will cool down to the lower 90s soon. Back to more digging this week. I will take pics and provide an update in a few days.
