Exclamation eradicating fish lice (argulus sp.) I need help.

      Hi there,
Can anybody out there help me on eradicating fish lice sucessfully. There are a few commercial treatments available on the market but do they work? as my koi pond as a total of 5000 gallons and this could turn out to be a very expensive task experimenting with differant products. Which is the best product to use? Which product do i use that as been a sucess in eradicating fish lice that any one out there as used therselves? Are there any alternatives i can use? I have been told that using supaverm is very succsessful but will kill goldfish is this true? and if this is the case what other species of cold water fish will this stuff also kill. Ive been keeping koi for about 15 years now and as far as using chemicals for parasites or bacterial deseases are concearned i have never had to treat my koi, so obviously i have been doing something right or i am very lucky until now. Can anyone please give me some very helpful advise, until then happy koi keeping folks.
      Jason.

      This is what I found on KV about fish lice;

Argulus is a crustacean or branchiurian parasite most commonly encountered in ponds, but they are also found in aquaria. They are easily detected when they strike. They are greenish disc shaped organisms with suckers and small legs. They even have a pair of eye spots on the anterior end. They spend their time darting around in the water away from, and also directly on the fish. They lay their eggs in tubular structures on the glass and ornaments.

They can be very destructive to fish stocks.

They carry Aeromonas and other bacteria on their feeding stilletto and thus infect each fish they bite.

Treatment is by the application of the insect growth regulator, Dimilin, or Diflubenzuron.

Another method is more dangerous: Organophosphates like Trichlorfon, masoten, Dylox, Dipterex, FLAW, Malathion and Fenthion. Anchors Away is also an organophosphate. I resist the use of these, because losses may result. Dimilin is superior to these compounds when fighting Argulus.

      uk127,
Welcome to the forum. I’m sorry it’s under these circumstances. Before any treatment, I'd set up a quarantine tank with filtration for the effected fish. That way you use less water and medications. Here some information:

      Here’s one article:

      Argulus - by Doc Johnson

Argulus - Fish Lice - this crustacean parasite is common especially in the Fall for some reason.
Here again, if you can see the parasite, you can kill it with Dimilin. It's wonderful stuff but sometimes hard to get. I discovered *another* completely safe treatment you can get from your local Vet for about four bucks - (Program) but all the open-minded 'doctors' in rec.ponds once assured everyone that it would kill your fish, (of course they did not even try it) and the company that makes it would rather not have it mentioned. Tough luck. Dimilin is dosed at 0.5 to 1 ppm or one gram per thousand gallons.

      Best of Luck –

      Bill

Try Anchors Away from jungle products... thats not made with dimilin as it's active ingredient.
It's always best to do a light PP treatment 1-1½ ppm before dumping the water. Dimilin stays active for a long time and will do a job on many chitinous invertibrates it comes into contact with.

      Welcome to the forum!

The most efficient and cheapest way I've found is PROGRAM flea medicine for dogs. IT WORKS, usually with one treatment.

Use 1 Large dog, brown pill per 1,000 gallons. Crush the pill and put it in some pond water. Distribute the water around the pond. By the next day, you'll see that almost all the lice are off the fish. This also takes care of any eggs in the pond.

The Program works by breaking down the exoskeleton of the flea, therefore, it can't live or reproduce. It also breaks down the exoskeleton of the eggs so they can't hatch. (Exoskeleton is not the technical name, but it's the outer shell of the flea or fish lice)

This will not harm the fish or plants. It will kill snails, however.

Dimilin works but in my experience within a month, the pond is infested again because the eggs hatch. Dimilin is very hard to find and a very strong chemical.

Every year I get lice in my small pond. I put one Program tablet in and never see them again until the following Spring. I have 3 ponds, but for some reason they only get in this pond!

      Hope this helps.
