      Tancho Showa

Here's another new one - I always try to have a pair to QT at the same time.
This is their pic at 6.5" don't know what sex - by Marusei.

The tancho makes me think of a scuba divers mark.

very nice koi, but not technically a tancho. it is a maruten showa.

to be a tancho, the tancho cannot touch the scales behind the head.

we had a few koi entered in tancho class at our show last year and the discussion among the judges was around this very aspect. so the koi with beni touching the shoulder were given demerits vs those that had the beni only on the head.

we had both ZNA & AKCA judges at our show.

now, back to the koi. pointy nose & face without any motoguro. pleasing pattern on the body. beni looks pretty thick so the spot has a good chance to stay.

      I actually dislike this fish.

The eyes look off center, one bigger than the other, and the sumi quality looks poor. The beni looks very bright and I'd almost want to say this fish looks pretty much finished.

      Billy,

"finished"? this koi looks like a typical male at this stage. the sumi is no where near "finished" nor of "poor" quality.

poor quality sumi would be charcoal-esque. unless my monitor is busted, the sumi looks typical for a young male koi.

I think the skin is too translucent still to be "finished." Not sure you would call that a maruten, though? I believe there has to be another red marking on the body, separate from the head marking for it to be maruten. However, I could be mistaken.

If I am correct, it is a tancho with a poor tancho mark, though it is objectively attractive, setting aside judging standards. There might be a problem with the eye.

I'd be interested to see how this one develops.

      Hi Carl,

Technically a tancho spot is defined as a roundish (circular is preferred but can be diamond, heart or something similar) spot restricted to the head of a koi.

Maruten is a roundish pattern on a koi with similar colored markings on the koi.

So, if the pattern runs onto the shoulder, it is technically not a tancho (or a poor tancho). This is why I rather call it a maruten.

Well! Haven't we been bidding up a storm!

Congratulations on your new fish. I'm not going to judge, just comment that I was at PI a few weeks ago and happened to see your fish. Given that we are already looking to rehome a few koi, and we have a Tancho Bekko and a Tancho Showa that we're keeping, I remember joking that this was one fish we were definitely NOT interested in!

Still, the head pattern is pretty striking, even from a distance. I immediately noticed him in a heavily aerated tank with a bunch of other fish. Hopefully you can fatten him up a bit.

I think for it to be a maruten, the spot on the head has to be of the same color as another marking on the body? If it's not a poor tancho, it's just a showa, isn't it?

Perhaps I am confused, but that is the way I learned it.

      Hi Carl,

That is why I stated in my first post that this koi was not a tancho. It would be a maruten showa as the beni goes into the shoulder (another part of the body).

We had 7 tanchos in our show and 4 of them were basically eliminated from the competition as they were not technically "tancho".

      Maruten Ochiba

I would have liked the "tancho" marking a bit lower. It's probably a Maruten.
Check out my Maruten Gin Rin Ochiba, notice the color on two other places on the body. FYI, Justed picked this up from Steve @ Sacramento Koi.

      Perfect Carl,
I would love to call this one a "tacho" but I cannot with the color on the body. MARUTEN or BUST

Of course, these classifications are for judging/benching purposes. The tancho police will not come to your house if you wish to call it a tancho.

thanks for all the replies so far.

I haven't bought anything in over a year and after losing half my stock this summer figured it was time to treat myself now that I'm back on my feet - I was in a car accident and broke my foot.

I lost my fish when they were in holding tanks for a couple of weeks because the pond had a leak (man bad luck just pours don't it). Dad was watching them for me and well he turned off the air to one of the tanks during a power outage. They were overcrowded as it was, so no air for 24 hours did them in. He's learning -now he knows how important air is!

I can fatten em up, got the space.

I got some fingerling Ogons to fatten up for the club sale back in April at about 1.5" to 2" now they are 13-16". Just right for a water garden. Although I might keep the white one.

give them some current to build a more uniform body. those tail tubes are weak vs the front 2/3's.

easy on the feeding, not too much high protein as they will also get pigeon breasted.
