What do you use for labling water lilies?

I have several water lilies and until last year have never thought to lablel them. I just knew what colors I had.
I took a nail and scratched the name in the plastic pot then took a crayon and marked over the scratches filling them in.
I know there has to be a better way.

Do permanent markers work? Paint markers?
What kind of tags?

I use a white mini blind cut into sections, and I write the name on both ends. Stick into the pot, use a permanent marker, so the name will be saved. It works the best for me.

Brother P-touch label makers use a two-part laminated tape that hold up to ANYTHING. I used to work at a chemical plant and we used this type of labeling system (only on a much larger scale) to label process lines in the plant. The labels were exposed to steam, water blasting, chemicals, and caustic gases, and never faded or peeled off. They are very tough labels. Just stick it on a piece of mini-blind and you have yourself a permanent label.

I knew someone that used to write the name of their lily and where they got it (((gift from whom or purchased place))) and date on a piece of file folder material and then put that into a zip lock freezer bag and place that in the pot with the lily...
Then when she divided she knew all the info...

for permanent marker be sure to use black as the red and blue like to fade in the light... btdt with markers out in the garden for what tomatos were which and then used red and had NO CLUE by the time we started to get tomatos! People liked them anyway lol

I use the metallic permanent marker on my black pots and write the name on the side and bottom of the container. I ususally have to clean the sides off to read the name but the name on the bottom is always easy to read and well preserved. Same works for the black marker too, the one on the bottom is always there.

I use a paint pen and write directly on the pot and I also use the mini blind slats with permanent market. Someone (probably a kid) pulled all the markers out of my plants once. Since then, I mark the pot too.

I use a hole punch on the sides of the plastic tub waterlillies are in. One hole = Mayla; 2 holes = colorado, etc. Never worry about fading or the tag falling out.

me too...if I did that with my hostas, I would spend all day just trying to count the holes!!

Back when I had larger ponds and more plants, I would use a drill to make the holes in the edge of the pots above the soil line. By using two lines of up to six holes (almost like braille (sp.)) you can get over 40 different combinations. Put the code in a notebook and your set. Only takes a minute to do and lasts the life of the pot.

Learned trick from a aquatic entomology professor of mine - to make some extra money I helped him and his wife with pond upkeep, starving grad student at the time.

I've used it for 30+ years.
