      Matsunosuke - Sakai

As the US dealer and agent for Toshio Sakai INC I get asked, quite often, questions about who he is and who he is related to.
The main confusion seems to be about who "Matsunosuke" is and whether or not they are related to Hiroji Sakai (he is no longer with us) of Sakai Fish Farms in Hiroshima.
Toshio Sakai, of Isawa Nishikigoi Center, and Toshiyuki Sakai, of Yamamatsu Koi Farm are both "Matsunosuke" and they are not related to Hiroji Sakai. Toshi Sakai, Toshio Sakai's son, did apprentice with Hiroji Sakai of Sakai Fish Farms.
Yamamatsu Koi Farm is now run by Toshiyuki's son Toshiyaki Sakai. Yamamatsu is located in the Ojiya area.
Toshio Sakai left Ojiya at the age of 18 to start his own business in Isawa as his older brother Toshiyuki inherited the family business. Both Toshio and Toshiyuki took the "Matsunosuke" bloodline developed by their father and have become very successful breeders.
Toshio Sakai has won the All japan Koi show 4 times with Koi bred on his farm in Isawa. As Toshio's business was developing he did not have adequate mud ponds available for taking care of these Koi so, his brother, Toshiyuki Sakai took care of two of these GC's, during the summer months, in mud ponds owned by Yamamatsu. For this, Toshio Sakai gave credit to Toshiyuki for two of the four GC winners at the All Japan Koi Show. Yamamatsu "Matsunosuke" has never had a GC winner at the All Japan Koi Show with a Koi bred by their farm. Sakai Fish farms has had five GC winners at the All Japan Koi Show.

The first pic is Toshio Sakai and the second is his brother Toshiyuki Sakai.

Toshio Sakai was the first to win GC, at the All Japan Koi Show, with a Sanke over 1 meter. This is a 101cm Sanke.

Thanks Russ, it's always been a bit confusing with the number of different koi labeled as Matsunosuke. That helps a lot.

      It's picture time.

Some other misinformation that has been posted about Toshio and Toshiyuke Sakai is that they have shared parent stock and have bred together. They have not done either of these things.

      Russell,

Yamamatsu are based in Nagaoka not Ojiya. The main facility in Mushigame, the tosai house on the other side of the mountain on the way over to Yomogihira and the newer house down on the flats alongside route 17 are all classified under Nagaoka City, which Ojiya refuses to be a part of.

      Hope that helps

Russell, tell us more about "Matsunosuke" bloodline, what to expect from his koi. Thanks. Can you tell us where is Isawa in Japan? Is the weather warmer there? Does he have hot springs there?

      Hi Steve,

Yes, thank you, I am afraid I don't know as much about Yamamatsu.

Russell, I found sume great info about Sakai of INC. I was really surprise that it says his fish don't peak until 12-14 years. written by Tim Waddington..

      http://www.uknishikigoi.com/tim/Matsunosuke.pdf

Not much can be said about this man that hasn’t been said already. He has produced over the last 30 years, probably the best and certainly most famous Sanke bloodline of all time. Matsunosuke bloodline is now in probably 70% of all sankes produced today, All Japan Champions, BKKS Champions, South Africa National Champions and numerous Champions in America, the best Sanke breeder in the world. Re-introducing magoi bloodline (Black carp) back into his own bloodline many years ago has since estabilised a huge growth rate, but over a steady amount of time. The very best examples of Toshio Sakai’s very best koi grow in length to about 4 years and then grow in bulk and body, amazing koi to watch. Other breeders have since tried to change the line so the koi bulk earlier, but they also finish earlier in age, where as the true Matsunosuke koi will not peak until they are upwards of 14years old, a true pleasure to watch and learn from.

Toshio Sakai is based out of Isawa, which is a 4 hour drive from Niigata, He does have a facility in Niigata because all his best Mudponds are situated in Niigata, so the koi are harvested, then taken to the Mushigame facility in Niigata and rested for 2 days, then trucked down to Isawa for public viewing, which if you catch Toshio on a good day can be the most amazing koi day you will ever spend. Now with his son ‘Toshi’ coming up fast, the company is due to change hands from father to son, and you couldn’t ask for better in Toshi, he is amazing to watch, his English is excellent and his eye is also fantastic. He worked for many years learning the commercial part of the trade at Sakai Fish Farms in Horoshima where he learnt vital experience of how huge koi operations work. The future of Isawa Nishikigoi is looking good, Im sure it will not be to long until another All Japan Grand Champion is supplied by this guys, the last one in 2002 where a 1.1Meter Sanke took the prize.

So how about one more link... I don't know the answer here, but do you know any heritage of the bloodline of the unrelated Sakai of Hiroshima?
