The sod is the worse part, unless that is clay!! I'm digging sand up right now from the old patio area for my pond. Hand digging is a form of therapy for me. I go through many emotions during the process.

I can't fit a tractor in the yard, so it is several guy friends paid in beer this weekend!

But there were several factors in not doing the Manta Ray....some financial but most of which dealt with the fact that I didn't feel I knew enough about construction/ponding/koi to take on a project of the caliber. And although I love the design, it scares that shite out of me when I think about it.

The Manta Ray is the equivalent of my Eleanor

rain - you need to make some rains.... and a lot of beers in order to make that hole deeper! Beers will give you energy to dig... dig... dig...

By my calculations, my 4000gal yet-to-be-completed pond required excavating 679 cubic feet of soil. According to Answers.com "average" soil weighs 78lbs/ft2. That works out to 53,000 lbs of soil to be carried out of the yard and onto the driveway, all by hand, and that doesn't even begin to describe the pain of lifting it out of the hole and chipping through rock-hard roots. Plus, about 250 bags of concrete and mortar (weighing from 60 to 90 lbs each), as well as a fair share of concrete blocks, each weighing about 24 pounds (I think) had to be hand-carried from the driveway to the yard. Good luck. My advice is... digging may be therapeutic but get a backhoe if you can.

Yeah, sure. I know, handling all those Shiro fry is becoming back breaking labor, right?

A backhoe is fun! Kinda like playing video games and getting your pond dug all at the same time.
