Indoor turtle pond....start to finish !!!

      The contruction to final completion

Material to contruct cabinet was Bruce hardwood flooring with a 150 gallon stock tank by Freeland.

10 inch high 3/8 thick glass is used to contain turtles

1/2 wall... wall mural was used for background

Eheim Professional 3 provides filtration (Note* I was not aware when planning this that Eheim filters as well as most/all canister filters require the water level to be at least 4 inches above the top of the filter) Because of this we had to raise the stock tank up higher with cement blocks. (see first photo) Also because the garage floor slopes quite a bit, it was a challenge to level everything.

The pothos plants are real all other plants are fake

Cypress mulch, real driftwood and assorted rocks for decoration

Basking lamp was hung using materials at Home Depot and a fake vine purchased at Petsmart

Custom made stain was used to match the color of the hardwood flooring. (requires a pro painter as no retailers match stain only paint)

Garage temps of 74 degrees are maintained for the turtles comfort. No water heater is used.

Acrylic covering was applied to lower half of wall mural to protect from splashing water

I have just one Western Painted turtle in there at the moment.

This project was done because I have been unsuccessful in hibernating turtles outdoors in the winter. I have lost 3 turtles because of this.
He will be headed outdoors for the summer and indoors for the winter.

Will probably add one more turtle but not sure what kind as of yet

I hope to build a large pond outside when I can but am afraid of trying to leave them outside in the harshest portions of winter so may be looking at making something similar to your setup with a 180 gallon stock tank. Think I may end up bookmarking this so I can revisit it. Excellent work.

      !!!

OMG. My friend Monica showed me this on facebook after poking around on the internet. I joined this forum solely so I could reply to it!

Jeff, this has to be one of the most inspirational faux animal habitats I've ever seen! I want to build one like this for my own RES! I just adopted her, because she comes from a family who finally admitted to neglecting her, and I so happened to be the only one they could "dump" her on. Needless to say, I immediately started researching RES's and learning all about what they need, and realized all too quickly just HOW neglected she really was.

That being said, I once built a giant ferret habitat the size of two bunk beds stacked together, and I remember how much joy it brought me to see the little creatures scurrying around after I had finished!

My question to you is (and I'm sorry if I missed this info posted somewhere and this is a double post) what was your end budget on this entire project? Filters and pumps and heat lamps included. All materials included? My boyfriend and I really want to build one of these for Squirtle, our new turtle!

Thanks for such amazing ingenuity and aesthetic eye!

Yes, my copy just came last week from Amazon. One photo is included in the book, although I thought 2 photos would be included because the publisher paid for two.
The book is really nice and the author told me my photo is the one everyone talks about to her. So that was nice to hear.

It was built in stages over the winter
It wasn't that expensive, unless you count the labor

      You basically have the

      1) stock tank ($250 includes shipping)
      2) Plywood and 2x4's $40.00
      3) Wall mural $50.00
      4) Glass $150.00
      5) plants, rocks, mulch $60.00
      6) Eheim filter $375.00
      7) wood trim and stain $50.00
      8) basking lamp with arm $80.00
      9) hardwood flooring (on clearance) $125.00
      10) plexi glass for cover $60.00

I guessed at some of these numbers from memory so I could be off some.

      $1,240.00 for materials

driftwood was free (found in the woods)
