How Would You Euthanize A Large Koi ?

High dose of clove oil will put the koi to sleep forever! For shot, it is very diluted dose. Please correct me if I am wrong. I used clove oil and put the fish in the freezer overnight.

a heavy dose of clove oil for about an hour will take care of any fish. The freezer is "just in case" but I'm not sure how necessary it is.

Ned, the freezer is for my piece of mind and insurance. I just want to make sure the koi doesn't wake up and walk around....lol

dispense 20 drops of Oil of Cloves per gallon (that will be in the bowl/tub) into a small bottle with a cap and some water. Shake the hell outta the bottle. Put water and oil into to the bowl/tub and add water. Put the fish in. It should pass out it ~5 minutes. When it is TOTALLY out, wrap it a couple of plastic trash bags and it it into a freezer overnight. In the following days dispose of the body.

Can just use salt. Salt will kill. Eugenol puts in deep sleep and freezes the rest of the way. The theory is that Clove oil can not kill so they use freezer to to make sure.

Clove oil will kill. I've used it on a lorge (very sick) koi. Used a very heavy dose and then waited for gill movement to stop - then waited at least 30 minutes more before necropsy. I almost always necropsy koi.

Oil of cloves:

• 3-10 drops per gallon is a good knock out for a quick medical procedure
• 20 drops per gallon should be a good knockout before freezing
• ?? drops per gallon to cause death directly

I've only had to do this once, (a 28inch chagoi is next, has cancer) and it's really a good time to learn a little anatomy and build on your disection skills.

If your trying to be humane, My vet recommended, knocking it out with a heavier dosage than normal, and freezing it.

I put down a small goldie with clove oil... Just put it in a large dose and walked away for awhile.

Dissolve as much Salt as you can in a tub place Koi in & it will NOT LAST Long at ALL , less than a Few Min , So , Say hmm 10-15 in a very High Dose & it should be already Stiff ? When I say As Much Salt as you can, I am not talking a hand Full , I am Talking as much as it can dissolve ,, pour the salt & mix it up, then add more Salt , it is Cheap , Do this till it wont hardy dissolve anymore , , drop the fish in there , belly up in less than a min, beyond the point of no return in just a few more short min !!

Did I not read somewhere on Koiphen that Freezing was not a humane way of disposing of a fish . I would go heavy on the clove oil, rwap in a black plastic bag then a knock to the head with a solid lump of wood. It is not nice , but quick .

Alka-selter works pretty good, narcotizes the fish and then kills it.

It depends on the koi as to how euthanasia is applied.

Beloved pet, worn out brooder, or any other fish with which I've an emotional attachment, they get alka seltzer or clove oil and buried.

Culls, mishapen koi, ugly koi taken from somewhere, etc. these get fed to the bass if small, hacked up with a machete or hand ax and fed to the blue catfish if large.

Its a farm, nothing goes to waste.
