What is the minimum temp koi should be kept at if cost were not an issue?

      Hi CP ..

The optimum temperature for carp is stated to be 77°F.

I think he means the minimum temperature, probably during the winter. It isn't ideal to keep Koi at 77 degrees all year round.

I think 50 would be the absolute minimum with 55-60 being the ideal minimum.

In keeping with the "four season fish theory," would 50f allow for egg absorption and sufficient reduction in metabolism overall?

I think so, if you wanted to you could push it a little lower to 48f.

Carp are a cold water fish. They need to have seasonal change. So a low of about 50 for winter seems correct to me. Summer temps should be close to 80.

You can use those outdoor furnaces to heat ponds.

I don't think so, you could go solar like pools do but the initial set up is a little costly. Remember a set up for solar for a pool is not the same as for a whole house so we are not talking $30k.

This corresponds to the lowest setting on my Thermostat or I would maintain 20C

I have some koi in a dream pond show tank in the cabana which is why I am asking. The cabana is heated so I can control the temp.

Solar. Run pond water through long black pipes exposed to sunlight. You can cover one side of a barn roof with a grid of black pipe and get good results. Not sure you can get to 50, but a 10 or 15 degree increase in normal temp is likely.

50-55 will slow them down sufficiently.

Also I think that less variation in annual temperature swings = less stress. I feel that 20-30 degrees F would be the maximum desired amount of variation.
