Talking Ooooo! I can use my japanese skilllzzz.

Atarashii Sumi Showa means, New Sumi Showa.

Other than that... I have no idea.

Maybe its referring to new style showa by matsunosuke??? Just a thought.

      A Lifetime.

Mr. Sakai has been working on his new type sumi for over twenty years. He is now promoting it as it has been stable for over four years. I have had discussions with Mr. Sakai and have asked about his new type Sumi and what he has done to create it. The response was just a smile. Later he shared with me that he has not even told his brother how he was able to achieve his Sumi. It is very impressive.

This Showa that I entered in the All Japan Koi Show last year has the Sumi.

Sakai has been developing this new sumi for his sanke and show line for the last few years. The earliest mention I can find of it on the net is about early 2006.

How did he develop this ink black sumi?

Yes, that is probably the first you would have heard of it as he really kept it under wraps until he was sure it was stable. Smart man.

He first showed the Sumi in his Sanke line in England. It gave the judges a run for their money as they thought it was a Showa. I think it was actually a Sanke owned by Bill Blackburn.

Did he start developing it in sanke and showa at the same time, or did he start with one and move to the other?

I think he started with Showa first. It was in combination with trying to get better quality and size in his Showa line.

What distinguishes this sumi from the sumi we usually find on showa?

From what I have read, the sanke sumi originally derived from the asagi-magoi line, and was characterized by a glossy black that appeared above the lateral line and the showa sumi derived from the tetsu-magoi line and was characterized by a matte, black that wrapped around the body beginning under the lateral line. (Tetsu being a forerunner of chagoi, as well.)

It appears that Sakai improved the sanke sumi, which was already thought to be of superior quality than show sumi, and then brought it to his showa line. In doing so, it appears that he made a greater improvement in the showas, than in the sanke since he not only improved the showa sumi to sanke level, he improved the showa sumi to atarashi sumi level.

Now, the new showa even have maruzume kiwa.

Of course, that is just my uneducated interpretation of what I have seen and read.

well then you started talking about the nice showas in the tank, and I pointed to the one that you were talking about (how I dont know).

So I bought it, and mike was there (koiczar) and he said he'd strangle me if I screwed the showa up.

thats the showa I was talking about!
Do you remember if it was new style showa? The black on my tosai is extremely black, so I am guessing it is..

I remember all of that, I just don't remember if it is atarashi or not. He still has his old style sumi as well. It is dark also.
