      Kato-san Mudpond Harvest

I was invited this year to help in Kato-san's mudpond harvest. It was a great day, It was myself and a few Chinese ZNA guys and a lot of famous koi breeders. The first day we harvested his older koi and another pond with 3 year olds. In between we had a lunch break and a nice talk with the man. For all of you who dont know who he is, he is the most Koi Kichi in the world. The #1 collector of koi and the ZNA head.

matt, thanks for the pics! That is a deep pond. I like the steps with standpipes. Nice to have that control of the draining process.

      What a great opportunity.
Kato-san was very generous after the Niigata eathquake. Good fortune returns to the giver!

To those who give, yet mark not gift

Thanks for the pics. Curious about the standpipes. In first pics they are capped with the pond drained. Later pics, they're gone and the wood sides, too??

      two different ponds.

I have been to this event many times in the past few years, the thing i find most interesting is watching Kato compare his koi in his photoalbum. All these koi were measured and myself and Saito photographed them. These pics will go in his photoalbum so he can compare their development. The koi house is his koi house used to store the koi until his return home.

Brian, that must have been great with mano. His boys were here to help on this one.

He does have some dogs. Not all the koi were great. But his enjoyment is just to watch them develop.

The paper on the back of the bowl gives the type of koi and size in CM for later refrence

Matt, Thank you. Very nice. For those of us who have only heard of Kato-san, but have no idea what he looks like, can you point out who he is in one of your photos? At first I thought the guy in green as he looked happy, but he seemed to young too hold such esteem. So I am thinking that older gentle looking guy in the blazer and tan cap??

How deep do you think the larger pond is, and how many koi were harvested out of it?

      Thanks,
      - Wayne, the guy that talks to himself that Matt and his wife think have a split personality pschological issue... lol... no he doesn't! yes he does!

The man - Masao Kato, Kato-san

Someone said he is 89 this year?? He does pretty good for his age.

He has more koi than most breeders. He also has quite a few ponds back where he lives. When the earthquake happened he let a few breeders use his ponds until they got back on their feet.

He truly loves and understands koi.

      Matt

Wayne- I can see the meds arent working.
