On page three there are some good zippers on those koi...
and of all the ones Brutucz has posted I would take the one with the small dot of sumi over the rest... KNOWING it is a kumonryu I would have faith it would be one when it got to about 4-5 yrs old.

This is one type I would dearly love to add to the pond but selecting a good one seems more than a little challenging.

If I didn't get so attached to each fish then maybe it would be easier.
When you go to buy one...Just think nice conformation and white, white as white can be!!! Doesn't matter what sumi you see..and pattern. The pattern will change like crazy. Mine has changed so much over the same season.

This is one I sold last season from Blackwater creek. It is a ginrin kumonryu. I kind of regret selling it because I wonder what it looks like now?? It wasn't a great white...but a very interesting look to it.

Disregard pattern, focus on quality, quality and quality of skin & sumi..... completely black eyes is a sigh for strong sumi in future....

As far as I know a little, Kumonryu breeder prefer to keep tosai like the attached picture as tategoi instead of the picture on the thread #51 since it has a lot of bluish sumi under the skin which tends to be a black fish eventally like Hajiro/ Karasu in a long term future.............

Luke, Brut and Super Kindai, thank you all for expounding on the qualities to look for in kumonryu. The pics have been particularly helpful.

Very early on in this thread the question was asked about particular breeders. Any thoughts on breeders doing an exceptional job on kumonryu?
It might help me narrow down selections.

Still learning as I go but y'all can call me Marilyn

1 Zippers across the back and down the lateral line (the most desired by koi elitists)
2 Completely scaleless ( second and cleanest looking)
3 Armored...messy but "interesting" to koi rookies

Thanks, Luke! I learned something today and thank to you sir! But it kind of make sense to me now since a shushi is a doitsu with zipper!!!
Happy Koiing!!! Water and nothing but water or filtration????

      Super Kindai,

Those are very nice examples of Kumonryu!!!! Now, I know exactly what to look for in a tosai - a good shiro utsuri with messy pattern!

      KoiToo.. Your Welcome
I still like the cleaner nude look of the totally scaleless...
it is simply the fact that the "three zipper" doitsus are so rare

I deal with blackwater creek koi. They really make nice kumonryu. They had an article in koiusa recently that discussed the broodstock joe had bought in japan. the female was almost all white with one black spot. He said this female gave birth to very many excellent kumonryu. If you don't mind it being domestic...a very good choice.

Breeders doing an exceptional job on Kumonryu are..........
As far as I know, Garyu in Ehime and Kaneko in Niigata are top breeders.
and also Matue in Shimane (for Jumbo), Sakai in Hiroshima and Fishland in Mie produce 1st class Kumonryu.

Tosai in the attached picture bred by Fishland and everybody can see easily it's lustrous skin quality and body flow.......

That's what I'm hoping for. The changeability of them is what I find so appealing. It also was one of the things that made it hard to figure out what to look for in a purchase.

Brutuscz, I think I had read earlier that you had purchased from Blackwater so I was in their site right after my last post. Thank you!

Super Kindai, that photo in post 59 made my jaw drop. Too beautiful for words. Thank you for sharing it and also the breeder information.

When you find another one like that, please let me know! The shiroji is unbelievable even if Photoshopped. The sumi pattern isn't completely to my liking, but on that fish, it allows the best feature, the shiroji, to be displayed without interruption. Incredible specimen of the variety. I still want a "killer whale" pattern.

If you look closely, you'll notice that there is "blue" under the skin. That is more sumi waiting to rise and IT USUALLY DOES! Hope for your sake I'm wrong about this one as it would be nice if it stayed like that!
