      Sundan's Spawning of 2009

I paid attention to your koi poll and the #1 demand was ochiba, soragoi, asagi. So on that note success with ochiba x soragoi spawning, should see half and half. Its not over until the fat lady sings, cause other things can go wrong, however have thousands of eggs that are fertile ( can see the black eyes in the eggs). Included picture of ochiba female I use for spawning, her skin is very high quality. If everything goes right could have some nice ochiba, soragoi, tosai in the fall. Asagi spawning next, then showa, kohaku, chagoi, the work nevers ends but I am very content. Life is good, " Joe Walsh".

really hard to see, fry are so small. See all the brown color at bottom, that is ochiba/soragoi fry, thousand of them.first day they munch on their egg remains, today infusria from the plants and treated water, tommorrow, brine shrimp for next 2 weeks then fry powder. Busy days and this only the first spawning.

next batch of control spawning. Place 1 female to 2 male in a 6 ft tank with spawning mops and mats, air ,good water, right temp and Dean Martin singing everybody loves somebody sometime and bam, lots of babies. Simple, right Showa danichi x Isa and Danichi x Takahashi. Mats have to soak overnight to sink to bottom. Make sure netting is very tight on tank.

and the night after the honeymoon is over. This is what you will see, milt foam. Showa Danichi x Takahashi parent stock is moved back to their tank. Spawning mops are treated with methylene blue to keep fungus down. Mops are then move to 10,000 gallon ring tank to grow out. Cull later and good ones go out to the mud ponds. You just never know, have two tanks with exact same conditions, water, temp, air and only one tank spawn, other was just not in the mood, maybe need some Barry White songs. temp looks good for tonight 68, I want some showa Isa fry...

spawning window here is short. I mean bam, all of a sudden it is to hot here so I got to work fast to have control spawning. Good tosai come from selecting great parent stock that has a lot of potential to pass on to the fry, flock spawning you don't know what you are going to get. Danichi,Hosikin, Sakai kohaku next then asagi. Want to try ginrin kohaku and ginrin chagoi also.

oyagoi stock in action. This is 2nd showa spawning. Takahashi x Danichi showa. What really surprise me is they were still dancing 830 am. Most I have seen is very early morning action and ready for a smoke and coffee by 8am My Isa male showa wimp out on me, maybe next year. For those who want to see my oyagoi, go to my album page. Cheers.

6 spawnings so far.even with spawning mops and mats wanted to show you still miss a lot of eggs in tank. At this time cannot afford the very fine mesh netting you can put in tank to get the miss eggs. Even so they are thousand of eggs on mops, mats. First picture of dry eggs, turn brown and next is eggs with water just drain from tank. Once these eggs attached to whatever they are not coming off. Only thing can do let them dry and brush with steel wire brush to clean tank. spawning Marayamu kohaku x Teradormari ginrin kohaku.fry picture you see is showa fry, those are the culls, you only keep the black fry for showa. work nevers ends, the good life.

Dan, I'll bet if you laid down a double layer of cheesecloth in the bottom of your spawning tanks, you'd get every egg. You can get cheesecloth cheap at just about any fabric store. It only comes in white, but it's cotton so it would dye very easily. If it was dyed black or dark green, you'd probably be able to see the eggs against the cheesecloth background.

Great thread. I'm holding my breath in anticipation!

Good idea, however I believe it will not sink to bottom and you cannot use rocks, flowerpots or whatever to weight down cheesecloth, not safe for the fish when spawning. But I do want to test this idea..Thanks.

True, but you (or your wife) COULD sew the cheesecloth to some sand-filled PVC pipe with glued caps on the end, and I'll bet it'll sink just fine!

Oh! And if your spawning tanks are round, just sew cheesecloth to garden hose or washing machine hose, connect it in a circle with glued PVC connectors to make a BIG Hula Hoop thingy...

where does the time go when you are so busy. ochiba, showa, kohaku spawning are growing. What amazes me is most of the ochiba fry were place in a mud pond and are already 6 to 8 inches, some more compare to picture you see of ochibas 2 to 3 inches in flow thru ring tank, same food, same time...difference is the calicum bentonite and temp. ochiba spawning was a female ochiba x male sorgoi, even with that bloodline you can see some kohaku from past dna genetics.

it is tuff to find the perfect match and get all aspects you want, good skin, good conformation, fast growth, appealing patterns, deep colors. Takahashi female showa x danichi male show spawning... a lot of fry but growing so slow. See the black fry, that is showa, others will likely be sanke.
