For the people who have built a PhPh, do you notice a decrease of foam production after certain length of time?

If so, could you post what the length of time is? I know this number depends on the PhPh size/flow rate, pond size, stock level... But I am trying to gauge the effectiveness of this design.

      Thanks.

I do realize a decrease of phoam. Completely? No. I feed an overwhelming amount of food to my fish so I always ahve a tad. If I hooked up the second, my guess is that it'd all go away. Let me see if I can ask a few who have made these to respond to your question.

I had an incredible amount day 1. It resembled Santa's beard as it made it's way into the bucket. Production diminished greatly day 2. I turned the pump off day 3, and started it up a few days later giving high foam production. I too, feed massive amounts of food to the "grow pond" so having DOCs is a given. Making the unit was certainly not a waste of time, quite the contrary, I intend to incorporate one into my main pond's filtration system once I get ambitious enough to actually do it.

I intend experimenting by placing a large air stone into the base of the tube and pumping 20LPM to aid in phoaming, but also I think that the tube will become an additional biofilter in its own right after a while, if run continuously, given the fact that oxygen is present and the very nature of the bioballs.

Either way, it doesn't matter. If there is one thing I have learned over the years playing with fish, it's the fact that there's no such thing as too much filtration, no matter what form the filtration actually is.

working on the 8" phoamphraxionator. Almost done.

Here's the bottom portion of the unit. The long tower connected to the 8" elbow will connect to this portion using an 8" fernco for ease of taking it apart, cleaning it, and moving it (my guess is that this part alone weighs over 50 lbs).

Ethan do you know aproximately how many cubic feet of bio balls are needed for the 6 inch version?

I am in the process of re-designing my filtration circuit and thinking about adding a PHPH to the skimmer->TPR circuit.

Naive question: will PHPH still work if the return is not gravity-fed?

a little over a 5 gallon bucket for the 48" version I made (48" of 6" pipe, nmot total height of unit with elbow). My guess is 1.25 cubic feet will be sufficient, depending on how tall you make it.

how would the return NOT be gravity fed?

after the ball valve after the unit, everything should return via gravity. However, any backpressure of water entering teh water via UNDERWATER may affect the backpressure of water in the unit, slowing flow and making the water rise in the unit.

It is best when used according to the instruxions.

Yes it is still gravity-fed. But I was worried about the back pressure.

Dilemma... how to return the water and still keep the aesthetics?

well, I am covering my whole unit with burlap and having vines grow on it.

Others have painted teh unit. You could partially bury it, and have the water return just over the pond surface if you could fit it that way.

So, who has built a phoam phraxionator and is it still working? Are your bubbles going down? have you measured your ORP and how is it now that you have the phoam phraxionator going?

Love to hear your stories. Was it worth it in your mind? What would you do differently? Did you make it different than mine? Did you use 4" pipe? did you stick with the 6" pipe or did you do an 8 incher?

Maybe I didn't make it clear. I used 6" pipe in my units. You can get it at Lowes.

the 8" I found early on, but ended up not using that.

Maybe. I am working on seeing if it will do that. I am not sure. Norm (sckrmkg) believes it can happen, I just want to make sure that I don't do anything that will make it less effective.

      Hey Ethan

My partner just finished installing one of your FF units. He used the cheaper 6" pvc for drains/downspouts and bought a DWV>PVC converter fitting to make the transition. The whole thing, minus the bio balls which he already had cost him under $60! I spoke to him earlier today and he says he's already getting a bit of foam. The water temps in his area are still a bit cool, so we'll see what happens when it warms up and he begins feeding regularly. So far, so good!

Just a suggestion for all using fractionators especially after showers. Get a cap to fit over the foam extraction/exit area. I have a fernco for it.
Most medications (can't think of one that doesn't) suggest having your FF offline while medicating. If you cap the extraction part you won't have to shut down the showers and fractionator.

Still learning as I go but y'all can call me Marilyn

Good suggestion Marilyn, but where does all the foam go?

While you are medicating, it doesn't. It stays in the water column with the medications.
