      Where do wakins come from?

LOL I feel like a kid asking where babies come from.

I have never owned any wakin and always wondered where I could get one in town but just never pursued it. I have always had comets, sarassa, shubunkins, and koi. I tried to get rid of all the goldfish because they bred like rabbits. THE DAY I went to catch them to send them packing to a new home I caught them going at it. Anyway long story short. I was taking out the babies today and found a wakin! Is that normal?

Just because it has a split tail does not mean it is a wakin

Do comets have a recessive gene that will do that?

Its soooo small I am having a hard time getting a pic. It has a tail that looks like a wakins tail but it looks like one solid tail and not split. It may just be so small its hard to see the split. The fish is only a half inch.

A traditional pond fish bred in Japan since the 1500s, the Wakin looks very similar to a Common Goldfish, but has a split tail. It is believed by many people that the Wakin was the proto-breed originally brought over from China, giving rise to the other Japanese breeds.

The Japanese use the term "Wakin" to describe all Common goldfish. This causes some confusion in the United States, because the word "Wakin" is used to denote single-tailed Common Goldfish in Japan as well...they use the word to refer to both types of fish. But in America, it specifically refers to the split-tailed fish shown here.

They look a lot like Fantailed versions of Koi, but have no barbels (whiskers). While Wakin are true goldfish, they can be in the same price ranges as Koi, with adult fish fetching hundreds of dollars. In Japan juveniles can be bought quite cheaply, but they are hard to find in America (and therefore more expensive), and usually have to be mail ordered.

Can straight tails (comets, shubs, etc.) have "wakin" offspring or do they come from a comet, shub, etc. & fantail cross?

I know you get them wakin to wakin but you also get straight tail comets, etc from wakin to wakin.

She didn't list any fantails as the type of fish she keeps ... they were all straight tail it sounded like.

What I read on a goldfish list before is that those that breed mass goldfish haven't been careful as to what might be in the mix. So if a comet looking fish came out of a fantail comet breeding it may be used to produce more comets. Just because they have a fantain doesn't make them wakins. I got some shubunkins a few years ago that had some split tails and in no way looked like wakins.

I have some fantailed fish that came from spawnings from my sarassa.

I have a freind that used to have a pond business and she said at one time you could purchase sarassa fans. But I have never found any information on them.

It does look like a wakin tail in that picture, you must have a single tail wakin cull. I sell many of them as goldfish here and they will breed wakin fantails. The orginal wakin tail was from a tail flaw that was carefully cultivated.

I always wondered if the single tailed wakin would breed and have double tailed offspring. I always get a few that have single tails instead of the doubles and I just sell them as goldfish too. They look like common goldfish but tend to be beefyer. I also have one female shubunkin in with all my wakin so I get a lot of what I call shuwakins. They look like shubunkins or sarassa comets but beefyer too. What really gives them away as half shubunkin is that they often have black button eyes.

I would keep them and see how they turn out.
