      [QUOTE=saltiery;1516911]funny.

      I prefer white heads as opposed to colored heads on kujaku...but that's a personal preference.

      That is actually some top breeders' preference.....
      Kohaku has Kohaku' pattern... then Kujaku as Hikarimono variety has its own preferably pattern especially heads.

Then add the attributes of a very high quality Goshiki and you should get something like what's in those photos.

      Yes, but.......

      Direction of an improved breed between Kujaku and Goshiki are totally different because..........

      Goshiki' goal is separation of beni and sumi ......not overlap each other.

      Kujaku' goal (and most difficult task) is systematic matuba reticulation on Hiban/beni......overlap on each other in perfect order.

      Yes Junichi, that is very true. That's why I mentioned that the larger one had such thick beni, the matsuba netting was having a hard time coming through it on the shoulder area which shows the quality of the skin/beni. Yes, that is the MAIN goal is to keep Goshiki beni "clean". In the older, original phenotype, the beni had the matsuba netting within it, very similar to Ai Goromo as both were coming from the same parents.

      So, are they trying to refine the look of the Kujyaku by mixing more Gin Matsuba into the genetic pool, or maybe even Narumi Asagi?

      I would have gone the same way you prefer. That selection is truly amazing as far as the expected end result!

      As far as I know a little, breeders who focus on Kujaku breeding do not mix other variety koi....

      So which ones do they normally look to keep from the first cull? Just the yellow and black?

      You mean to say they breed Kujyaku X Kujyaku? I would think they would try to add something to the mix. How else could they try to "improve the line" if so much inbreeding was going on?

      Conformation is stated at the beginning of the thread. First post.

      Smooth heads means no patchy random spots without hikari. Beni covers orange, and if it's a Kujaku it will have a kin or hikari shine to the whole fish. Orange is okay for developing fish, but the result is supposed to be red.

      That fish has a clean head, but the fins should be clean as well. The colors are fine, just not spectacular. Nice fukurin from what I can see though.

      Actually what you are saying here is incorrect. Kujaku can be orange, yellow or red and that is OK. When you say Beni Kujaku you imply only RED, not orange or yellow. Yellow would be KI Kujaku and as far as I know Kujaku is orange.

      Both of those are not going to turn out very good. They are already dark, dirty and don't have very good Hikari.
