Sure, I made mine out of about 10' stick of 4" pipe filled with K1. It was back in the woods so
I really wasn't concerned what it looked like. I fed it from the top of my s/g filter...

I have used on outlets of moving bed, shower and anoxic filters. It should work just fine. Nathan recommends flow rate of approximately 1500 gph per his design. I used 4" pipe. At 1500gph, worked great, marginally at 3500gph and not at all at 6000gph.

Do you operate it from time to time, or do you recognize a condition on the surface of your water?

It's still up there in the woods but I've never needed to use it again. It's been years and I'm sure the K1 is really nasty. Actually,
for some unknown reason a rat crawled into the top of the 4" pipe of K1 and drowned right after I created it. It was in there for
about a month before I even realized it. Never had it happen again but it's worth keeping an eye on the pipe. I put a piece of
epdm over the top with a small hole cut in it for the water inlet pipe to keep critters out. Didn't ever seem to effect the effectiveness
      of the FF.
