      Hi!
I agree that lots of cow poo may cause more problems than it will fix. There may be long term bacterial and water quality problems but I am not sure.
Although, I do use a small amount to fertilise my pond before fry season.

The higher you can keep the water level in your pond when you do try out the airstones and new bentonite the higher it will seal.
It probably wouldn't hurt to turn on your air pump now anyway and run it. The current should still keep some bentonite in suspension and it may help seal any seepage below the water line over winter.
If that works then you only have to worry about the rest next Spring.

If you can get a long wooden ladder and leave it in the pond at one end it will make sure you are safe to get out of the pond when you fall in. Not if but when. I've learnt the hard way.
It won't hurt the fish but it'll keep you safe.

      Cheers
      Bindi.

      bindi, two more excellent ideas.
I spoke to my bulldozer friend after reading your post and he's coming over next week to shovel some clay. plus, i just have to set up the airstone. thinking, since the pond is so big, we'll do it in sections.
re: wooden ladder. that's a brilliant idea. thanks v. much.
just so happens -- i have a great old apple tree ladder. got to be 15 feet tall. i btw, WELCOME TO KOIPHEN!
i hope you'll have fun here and meet some good people.
      all my best,

      Thank you for the welcome!
I have read here for a while but never got around to posting much.

I am not sure how big an air pump you have but most of them, that are for koi ponds, will run 5 or more air stones so just run as many as you can that will still run vigorously to create currents.
Air pumps are better run with more stones rather than less to stop back pressure from wearing out your pump prematurely.
I also have a long wooden apple picking ladder I use around the place and they are great!
I'd put a rope on the top rung and tie it off to a stake in the ground so it doesn't move once it's in the pond.
I also keep an inflated car tube in the pond for safety, ok it's really for fun coz I go swimming, but we'll call it for safety.

      Good luck with your pond.

      all great ideas.

i have one humongous pump that's good for an acre or two. it's hooked up to the lake but not in service now, so just have to buy some more tubing and move the airstones.
and then, i'll have plenty of air. i also have the pump that was supposed to be dedicated to this pond.
thanks v. much, bindi. i suddenly see a light there at the end of the tunnel.
      i'll post progress reports here!

      Cool!
Looks good! Now you just need a few more along the whole length of the pond.
If you can get the water to look turbid/greyish then you'll know for sure that the bentonite is in suspension.
I hope this works for you, or at least helps, as there is nothing worse than having a pond you can't use.

      hi all,
Snow on the ground may the delay the shoveling of the bentonite into the pond this week. The aeration has kept the pond from freezing, big time. Water level is clearly dependent on inflow from the brook. when leaves plug up the 4" inflow pipe, the level of water in the pond goes down. i still don't see anything like a whirlpool, and the outflow has been closed for months. Pics later!

      The leaking pond is full!

As of now, the leaking pond is full, water reached it's highest level and is flowing out through the outflow pipes.

I did run the blower for a week per Bindi's suggestion, but had to shut it off on Friday last because that switch was connected to other items i had to turn off.

Still, once i uncapped the inflow from the brook so much water poured in that the pond filled to overflow.

      has the leak stopped?
are we simply importing so much water, the leakage cannot keep up?
is there some sealing effect when the water/air are at freezing?

more as news breaks on the leaking pond.
