Meanwhile, back at the ki shusui project koi farm...

John came over day after the mighty flock spawn pull and the home team drained the tiny pond, retrieved the oyagoi, put them in a rubbermaid for a group shot before release into their true home, the Big Pond. I miscalculated the effect of full sun so the fish photos are overexposed. however the fish are fine.

They've had a tough and stressful six months but you cannot tell.
Beautiful girls are already egging up for next year.
I released them into the Big, thanking each for his/her fine contribution to the abundant 2017 ki shusui spawn.

This evening, I fed all the fish in the Big, and three of the six oyagoi answered the call -- "Here fishy, fishy." LOL and came up to feed with the rest of the herd. Wow. That just felt great.

Thanks for all the great photos from the pulls. Too bad you aren't right down the road, I'd love to have seen the action.

I know they are not the big goal here, but some of those orange-red shusui look really good!

Matt, thank you~ I like those red kids, too. great back drop for blue/white/chartreuse/yellow. a vigorous type and gets BIG.

I'm sorry you don't live down the road, too.
We're on the high seas at present, waves unbelievable. i mean unbelievable. Diners being flipped out of their chairs like .... fish! very spotty internet. i'll post photos in photography when i get home.

Announcing -- live stream baby ki shusui harvest,Wed, May 9, 10:00-ish a.m to finish.

      Dear Matt24 and alllllllll!

When last I wrote, we pulled the Lower Pond, aka the nursery.
We returned 888 babies to grow-out in the nursery, out of the 6,700 we harvested
I didn't want to cull the best 888 until they had a little more growth.

So May is here! And if we're not in the middle of a blizzard, or a hurricane, we're harvesting tosai/nisai -- and streaming the action LIVE with SOUND on Wed. May 9th - and early birds can help by letting us know how the reception is.

Time and Date: Wed., May 9th, from when my friend John Clark arrives at 10:00 a.m. or so until finish, often about 3:00 including tailgate pizza lunch.

The Plan is to choose the best 100-150 and return them to their nursery.
To split the remaining 700 or so between the Middle (Learning Curve Pond) and the Big (ki shusui project pond) where their parents and grandparents reside.

We will have drained nearly all the Lower pond before John arrives with his seine net, so this pull could go very fast. If you want to catch it, I'd try to be here at 10:00 when Mark Bruno, our videographer will be doing sound checks.

I'm hoping we can get a live chat going at the same time. I'll be in the mud, but my DH, John Duffy, can type.
and you guys can throw out commentary.

I will post links to the vid and the chat when I have it.

Also, we will have a mystery KP guest, who will be doing a lot of driving to get here.
This is a thrill for me.
Hope to see KPhriends at VIRTUAL pondside, too.

I'll post a countdown clock a week out. Meanwhile, I've seen a small school of tosai. It's still under 50F in the water and snow is in the forecast! geesh.

      Talk soon!

It's been unusually cold for April here too. Thankfully, tonight looks like the last chance of freezing air temps.

Poor little fishies. Usually, by now, would have been feeding them for a month. And they got the early cold weather back in October, too. This is going to test the tosai mettle, all right.

      John's plan wins!
Bulldozer Steve is coming over next week to add two small to medium-sized holding ponds on the north side of the Big for a total of three mud holding ponds.

I'll pace off dimensions after Steve finishes the work. We will be feeding these ponds from the Big Pond and have a satellite well hydrant only a few yards away from the site plus electric so "massive air."

The immediate advantage of this work is that I can divvy up the tosai into 1. very promising, 2. not kicking them out, yet, and 3. meh -- but give them until Oct. to surprise me.

MIKE = yes, hope you can get the video on the boat. If now, within a few days or so, we'll post on youtube and provide links.

      Got sunny 50F+ degrees everyone~

Translucent water in the mud -- so, here are some PICTURES!

      Team Ki

I only get to see entire fish for a few weeks a year until they start getting busy mud mining. Then, it's all lips and dorsal fins!

If you're new to my project or hey, had other things to think about the Big Pond holds the oyagoi of the past spawns, Japanese stock, F1 parents and their siblings plus a few flock-spawned kids hatched here.
      It's a genetic stock pond.

A topic for discussion some other time is why some are afflicted with rising sumi to unreal ugly degree -- and others -- blood relatives -- have clean, white, blemish-free skin. I know there's a genetic answer, has to be, more than a water hardness issue But meanwhile you'll see some beasts in with the beauties. They were beautiful once!

See some clean pale blue shusui who weren't picked for the varsity team in years past. I see a little bit of ki on undersides so i know the ki gene is there and I'm going to give them more of a look in the October pull.

Also, see some nisai shusui and ki shusui spawned here in 2016, including one named Mr. Rainblood Jr. All generations enjoying mud in New York. It's 51F! Finally!

      :voila:

Arid, EST, Eastern Standard Time. I'm in New York. My siggy line has the widget telling what time it is here. If that helps. As i post this at 7:22 a.m., you posted 7 hours ago.

      Thanks, Delbert!
FYI i went out to feed everyone last night and lack of interest in the Big Pond. hmmm. What's this. Then i hear the sound of sucking around the entire perimeter. Fish were lined up faces to the shore line, sucking up eggs. Fish I've known for 9 years! They have no shame. well, won't be fry overstock in the Big Pond in October.

      Be advised!
