      I'm so slow!
I just realized that you had a tragedy, so very sorry!

Someone else mentioned buying yellow culls, sign me up for wee fingerling culls, too! But they'd have to ship to VA.

Hoping for the best, these koi are very beautiful!

      Hi, Secuono,

      Thanks for checking in.
Right now the lower (breeding) pond is virtually covered with duckweed.
I'm afraid to skim the duckweed off so that I don't hurt whatever fry are in the pond.
I honestly do not know what's going to come of this hit or miss 2021 spawn.
If I can get some local help, we'll try to skim the duckweed when it's not too hot.

this year may be the last test before next year.
I did see my precious "legacy" this week so she's still with us.

Max, Last year found your ki shusui project and read through from beginning to end (to that point). I just went through and re-read as it’s an incredible journey. (Still chuckling at the captions on many of the pictures mid-journey.)

Now waiting with bated breath (appropriately defined as in a eager and anxious state) to hear and see how this round of F3 offspring turn out for you. The F2 generation you picked additional contestants from were incredible looking fish. Fingers crossed for you for the next round of seining and discovering who is under the duckweed.

Smile Hi, Dear friends -- The Ki Shusui Project is still here. :)

      Hi, Dear Friends,
Thanks for checking in and to all of you who wrote to me and I did not reply, I didn't receive notice because I was having computer melt-down for a change, and swapped in a new system, still undergoing tweaks.
But this is not the point, is it?
      LOL
      FISH.
Fish look good and the water is muddy. Hard to get these breeders to come when called. Being haunted by the Great Horrible Blue and some other kind of predatory bird with a brown tuft and fat yellow legs. This thing can get through the 2 x 2 inch net grid, and then flaps like crazy, hangs upside down and gets out. He does not look like pictures of various herons and kingfishers. Looks like he made himself up. Anyway. he looks like a small fish hunter and so that's when Duckweed is your friend!!!

      BABY FISH
yes, we have baby fish, but I cannot get a good bead on them. Interesting in a weird way, that my 2017 fry were extremely social, all Seven Thousand of them, Caring for and watching them school and fountain and clack their tiny jaws was a peak experience! Yes. (get out much, Max -- no.) These babies are the correct size but this is all I can tell in mud, duckweed, shadow.

WE MUST WAIT UNTIL OCTOBER and I'd say our pull week is about exactly One Month Away.

Back to duckweed. I've been quite proud of my 43% protein duckweed, but it is a pain and will be more of a pain when we seine. JOHN CLARK (if you're reading) says this plant cannot stand and has had some thoughts on how to abolish it. We did net some out (thanks Sean and Sally) and it made a big difference to the fish in that they seemed to like seeing sky. But also true, they seem to like cover under the duckweed.

Doesn't matter. We will look at the baby fish. And if they s_ck, we will recapture the 2 F2s who survived the water loss tragedy in the Lower, Legacy and her mate, Omega Man. Isolate them, croon love songs and see what else we can do to induce spawn.

      FISH FOOD.
Going through a 40 lb sack of Blackwater Koi Gold-N per week spread over three ponds, about a million gallons and I really have no idea how many fish. The fish look Good. The koi in the Learning Curve, aka Pet Pond -- are monsters in the nicest possible way. And many ki shusui offspring are showing off in the BIG pond, so i'm pleased overall

Will post dates of koi pulls when we nail 'em down.

Sending Team Ki a big thank you for checking in. I hope to have answers and many photos in about a month.
All the best to all a ya'll.
      Max

Ohhhh, I'm so ready. The weather here like everywhere else is totally unpredictable. Will it be rainy? Will it be cold? We'll see in October.
