Steve, good story. I can't see the bird from my house but you make a good point about them getting the message.

In my case, I've been driving my car around my ponds several times a day and honking the car horn.

Bird doesn't like the car horn. I didn't see him/it yesterday at all. However, they do work at night. In pairs. So I'll install the alarms when they arrive on Tues.

      Will keep you all posted.

He hasn't given up yet... Yesterday AM I waited until about 6:30am on the porch and decided maybe he wasn't going to show I will go for a walk to the mailbox. My walk was about 10 minutes...on the way back to the pond crows were getting really loud so I knew something happening close. As I walked up to the pond area the blasted heron took off from the pond. He had waited for me to leave. Smart buggers. I had checked the trees and area before I walked off SMH. I had put in a few large pieces of Styrofoam to allow the koi to hide, I don't think the bird figured out what it was. Net is arriving today 5 am is getting old

      Hi, All,
We got unbelievable rain yesterday and all night. the kind with jagged lightning strikes and boomers that shake the furniture. I'll bet stupid/smart bird didn't like that.
i think i may have said this, but if i didn't, the bird does not like car horns
today or tomorrow the motion sensor alarms will be arriving. I will report in.
just a small anecdote about pouring down rain yesterday while we had daylight.
Fish in the pet pond were spawning.
      in July!
anyway, they broke off a clump of reed which floated out to middle of pond and they kept at it.
Up in the air, the bird sees all these colorful fishies doing the dance in a small floating raft of reeds.
His feet are tucked under him as he figures out where to land.
I gave him a good blast of the Subaru horn and he changed his mind and veered off.
i couldn't leave that clump of reeds in the middle of the pond with fish flashing.
Somehow, with a long pole we maneuvered the reeds inland and under other reeds so whatever fertilized eggs were on the weeds stayed on the weeds and the bird did not come back while i was watching.
      point for the fish!

I wonder what the current status is with this ki shusui project. I guess that it must be the 3:d generation now.

I reached F3 and then had the winter/no water disaster. I had two stalwart oyagoi and found others that may have been siblings in a big pond i've stocked with leftover babies from big hatches and selected a couple dozen that could be siblings of the F3.
I'm looking for pix of last October's ('23) batch.
I did not get pix of their offspring due to knee replacement surgery and friends wouldn't let me into the pond for fear of me getting stuck in mud!! lol.
okay, upload failure due to lack of practice. will start new post.
      Thanks for your interest!

Thanks a lot for the update and your great pictures. I wish I could buy some from you :-)

I guess that you probably already have written on it earlier but due to the huge number of posts in this thread I wonder if you could say again what the selection ratio is to get so nice ones?

      And

      Happy new year!

      Hi, Simon,
I can do better than that.
i have a slightly out of date website:

      www.kishusui.com

If you go out there, let me know if you have the info you want and if not, ask here.

There should be some pics of the lost koi generation on the site.

Happy New Year to you, too!
      And to all of us.

Simon, I so appreciate your interest in this hobby of mine. I never knew fifteen years ago how much would be involved. It's been rewarding and I've learned a lot. I'm looking forward to seeing the 2023 spawn in Oct. 2024.

It's great to hear from you Max and see your big beautiful koi!

I have a question about your approximate percentage of the different scalation types you typically get in your spawns before you do the selections. Before you pick the ones you want to keep, about what percentage are leather, linear, fully scaled (Asagi), and scattered scaled?

It looks like the vast majority photographed (after the selections) are the "leather" scalation type, having no scales on the lateral lines, which indicates the ssNn gene pair. "Theoretically", when crossing these ssNn types together, there should be no chance of getting linear scaled or asagi (fully scaled) types, because there is no big "S", only the little "s".

Very few photographed are the "fully scaled" asagi type (Ssnn). The lack of the big "N" keeps them from being Doitsu.

Very few photographed are the "linear" scalation type, having the row of scales on the lateral lines (SsNn). A few of yours seem to have maybe two or three scales on the lateral line. I am not sure what gene grouping that indicates, though my guess would be that those are still SsNn, like the linear type. If so, perhaps these are how occasional asagi shows up, since crossing SsNn (linear) with ssNn (leather) can result in some Ssnn (fully scaled).

      Hiya, Matt,
Good to hear from you, too!
The answer to the percentage of leather, scaled, linear, or in between is, I don't know.
Since the first spawns where i was trying to get ki asagi by logic. I started with three shusui, three doitsu lemon hariwake, and one midori from Marusaka which was a bluish green. According to an accomplished breeder (Bindi) I was very lucky with that F1 spawn. We were looking for how close to Ki Shusui and just gave away all of the scaled fish. We made some exceptions for conformation, pattern, whatever, but this was not scientific.
As you may remember, my silent partner John Clark, does the actual seining and I stand in the water and pick the keepers. John sells fish to pond/fish owners. And he relieves me of the excess koi that are not going to help move the project forward.
One year, he filled a truck with 5000 of my little ones and i still kept 2,000, putting the best in the breeder pond and a big lot into each of the other two ponds.
And this is why I don't have a clue what percentage were scaled but since my official first spawn, i had no scaled oyagoi. Still the scalation genes show up.
As for that little asagi, she's in the BIG pond and i have a few scaled fish in there.
      Sorry I just don't know!

Thanks much for the info you recall Max! I am just trying to learn more about how the scalation genes work, adding what you have seen to what I have seen and read. You mentioned ...

Since that first spawn, do you think all your oyagoi have been scaleless all the way down the sides? Or might there have been one oyagoi in a spawning group that may have had just a couple of scales on the sides, if you recall?

      Hiya, Matt,

Sure, we try to eliminate any scaled fish but I can't swear that they have all been perfectly leather. If "dragon scales" show up, it's no go. If there are a few linear scales, we might ignore them and keep the fish. There are Just sooooo many of them. We try not to torture them by keeping them in nets and tubs for very long while picking through them. I'll pay more attention to percentages next October.
I'm counting on the kids from last year's spawn and next year before I call the project a done deal. Too bad you live so far away, my friend.
