Very sorry to hear of such a heartbreak Max. Maybe Legacy and "Omega Man" are just the ones to continue the program.

And since young koi characteristics can develop over time, maybe you will find other worthy participants when you pull the big pond.

May your spring & summer be more peaceful and fruitful!

Matt, first thanks for the kind words and support.

You've got it exactly right. John Clark watched and helped me winnow 100 + of my best ki shusui F2s last October down to 17. Now some unknown mammal took me down to two with the phenotype I like best. But there are another 85 F2s (minimum) in the big pond. I don't think they will raise their fins and say me, me, me, but if we find another handsome male, the odds of the lucky survivor pair increases -- or so i think.

We'll probably pull the Big next week. Will keep you posted.

Marg, thank you for this note. John Clark is liming the pond at this moment and the survivors are snug in the frigid water in a nice net basket waiting for freedom and maybe sex. I'll post again later with pics and thoughts about what happened.

      Update on the Lower Pond

      Hi, Everyone,
John Clark came over around one or so and stayed for hours. He pumped out the residual rainwater -- we had sleet this morning -- and spread lime over the pond bed. New theory on why the fish were gone and a new fact. Monty (mason and all around fix-it man) had taken out fish corpses more than i knew and buried them. He wanted to spare me the shock, and maybe he was right to do that, but maybe it would have been better to see what those corpses looked like.

I thought that he had only found seven dead fish, but it was closer to ten or more plus the two living survivors and so about three unaccounted for. He found the most of the dead fish in the shallow end of the pond in the cattails that had collapsed over winter. John says things like this happen and you just never know the cause, but it is possible that they got caught up in the reeds and because of the cold weather died in the shallows.

As much as I hate this explanation, I prefer it to ghostly murder leaving few corpses.

We had sleet this morning, but with luck all is going to warm up next week.

Legacy and the last Man Standing are doing well in their net basket with a plywood lid, standing in a mud pond of a few thousand gallons, which john describes as a heat sink.

Tomorrow we open the taps and fill the lower pond and in a week, the surviving couple return to a newly limed and filled freshly cleaned pond.
Let's see if I can download the photo of liming the pond.

      Thanks all,

Quick update on back to the pons.

      Hi, all,
John came over yesterday, fished Legacy and Omega Man from the net basket and returned them to the Lower Pond where they were conceived, hatched and lived their whole lives. These fish are F2s and if/when they spawn, their offspring will be F3 which is far as we go with this line. It would be better if we had another male or another pair, so next week, we'll be doing a quick version of draining/seining big pond. Last Oct. I took 85 F2s from the Lower and released them into the Big. So we have the genetics, just need to capture the few who may look good enough and I think we can do that. Have seen candidates.

Next week can't come soon enough.

Here's hoping for a few new guests having a great party in the pond soon. Warmer weather would sure be helpful. Maybe by the light of the full moon next month?

      Dear friends.
      Omega man loves Legacy.
When she took a left and he took a right, i worried would they find each other. John assured me they would. and last eve, (wed) there was omega, back to chasing Legacy, nose to tail. it is quite warm now raining and plenty of old reeds to swim into, so fingers crossed. maybe legacy will just say, "fine." and release her eggs. he's been ready to go for two weeks now.. checking out potential plus 2 or plus 4 in the big and i see plenty of sibling candidates.
feeling a little optimistic, can you tell?
thanks, you guys, for the encouragement.
