Yes, banded water snakes are live bearers. I saw one giving birth about 2 months ago. Water moccasins are also live bearers, but it is really easy to tell them apart. Baby banded water snakes look like the mother. Baby water moccasins are lighter with more pronounced cross bands than the mother, and the last few inches of the tails of the babies are brightly colored - usually yellow, but sometimes green. The tail in adults is black.

When I had goldfish a large bullfrog ate many of them. I couldn't catch him. But a raccoon did and punctured his side and killed him. I think the racoon got some of the bullfrog's
"venom" or whatever they have because it was just one puncture.

Good Grief! My wife once saw a half-grown bullfrog jump off the top of our waterfall and catch a small bird that had lit on a trellis. So no telling what your "Jaba" frogs could swallow. Good luck with your frog herding.

Bufo are toads, not bullfrogs, but, yes, Bufo excrete a toxic substance on their skin. Bullfrogs are Rana (or Lithobate), and are not toxic, but they will eat fish and birds.

Well. I have a giant frog-eating snake on the payroll!
Seriously, frog eating bird is a nightmare.

Just checking in Max. Has there still been no spawning by the group that you selected for this year? There is still plenty of time.

      Hi, Matt!
      Thanks for checking on me.
Bottom line, I see no interest on part of either the oyagoi or the F2s.
Now. I have this "uncommon" duckweed, large for the type, with roots look about a half inch long and it covers a reasonable percentage of the pond especially at the margins where the aerators blow it to the sides. Always possible fry are living under this large green blanket. but I have seen nothing. Btw, this duckweed has 43% protein and the fish are eating it, just sucking it down -- hardly making a dent.
      Also,
The fish in the Big and Middle ponds have done the dance and not just once. The Big has no duckweed. I have seen no fry in either of those ponds, either!
      I'm not sweating this.
Have decided I will leave the 3 female oyagoi in with their kids over winter and maybe next spring they'll be in the mood.
But I think I'm gonna call John Clark and if he's in the neighborhood he may bring over his tell-all white bucket and tell me if I'm crazy or correct!

Maybe a good rain and/or full moon will eventually get them going yet this year.

Sounds reasonable to me Max. I was think that a while back you mentioned maybe waiting for 2020 anyway. The males will be more mature by then, though I'm sure they could now if all the conditions were right.

      Orlando and Matt,

I went out and shot this picture of the Middle Pond at sunset - you can still see the duckweed blanket. :0
There was crazy spawning in the Middle. The lower pond also has much of this duckweed, but there was NO partying. But the Big Pond has NO duckweed, insane partying and I see no fry.

In this, the Middle pond, think it's possible for babies to be hiding under the duckweed, but there are some open areas behind the fringe of reeds where we have had lots of fry in previous years. This year, zippo.

      October will tell the tale.

      Thanks you guys!

Photo updates of the F2 ki shusui :)

      Team Ki! and all.

These are the F2 ki shusui kiddos hatched in May 2016.
      Now, just over 2 y.o.

The project is still in progress. F3 should be the finish line and that could be next year or 2021.

These guys are living in their own pond, the Lower.
They have a nice blanket of duckweed, unplanned, but this duckweed has 43% protein and acts as a sunscreen, too!

I'm interviewing for the next parent generation and while some of these are smudging, several have stable ki markings and all i need is about six with a combination of the best ki shusui traits.

If you see a much larger koi in with the littles, that's one of the three F1 I imported into the lower hoping to have a back-cross, parent to child dancing, but can not see any fry.

Now how do you determine the protein percentage of the duckweed?? I don't think mine's as good.

Steve, friend Heather works at the Cary Institute and is a freshwater biologist. She sent me this info.

"It needs high ammonia and phospgorus; provides shade; reduces algal growth; high protein food; duck weed is thriving due to high nutrient loads into the system."

      http://bioponica.net/growing-duckweed/

If you open this link above, there's much info on duckweed, how to grow it and I found it fairly astonishing.

I snipped this from the article.

      Nutrient Profile

There could not be a more ideal plant in the entire world than duckweed. Under ideal growing conditions it contains up to 43% protein, 5% lipid and is highly digestible. What's more is that it can be grown anywhere there is a high degree of ammonia and phosphorus in the water.
Duckweed has a similar nutrition composition to soybeans and is a plant that most closely resembles the protein values of animal meat.

-- I have it in two of the ponds, but not the Big. I think i should import some to the Big for the nutrition value, though it is a real mess when seining pond. John Clark raises grass carp for sale. He took a five-gallon bucket of it last week for the carp. Yes, makes me nervous that it likes high ammonia, and I have not checked my water quality this year. The fish look very darned healthy. But if i'm going to go science-y here, i should test.

For the duckweed, I would think a continuous supply of ammonia would be as good as high ammonia. It would not surprise me at all if ammonia is too low to quantify using the API test kit. The duckweed is thriving because the koi are constantly producing ammonia, but the ammonia concentration in the water could be too low to quantify since the duckweed is utilizing the ammonia as quickly as it is being produced.

      Hey, Rick,
      Thanks!
No nightmares tonight, but I'll def. test tomorrow and let you all know. As for phosphorus, what's that got to do with pond water?

As far as freshwater fish are concerned, phosphorus concentration in the water is neither good or bad, but phosphorus (along with nitrogen and potassium), is one of the major nutrients needed by plants. Fish food contributes to the phosphorus in the water, and depending on the location, the source water could be high in phosphorus in the firm of phosphate.
