      Big Pond Part. 1 b.

Asking ya'll to visualize the candid shots because there are none from the still cameras.

Many, many folks were too fussy to stand in rain so we had a blue tent set up with view of the measuring, cooing, and other silliness below. Visitors, dry. No pix of them or yours truly. fish were dropped into tubs, a lot of them multiple, water removed, new water refilled ("Sean! Need water!) Often too much water in tub and we were working fast. so enough excuses, koigrl!

I have found I'm getting better at "culling" and will have numbers from David who is the tabulator soon. But many of the 250 blue ki shusui who went into this pond have no ki and other issues and they have gone with John to mud ponds everywhere or will soon.

Here are some posed fish pix.
When I get the video, I will post.

Meanwhile, right now, as i write this, the Lower Pond aka nursery is being drained.
We'll be examine potential oyagoi at 2.5 y.o. and will post a few shots of the best, later. And seeking the ones for the grow-out comp!

Remains of the Big Pond pull on Oct. 9th.

      Rain, Steve, Delbert Team Ki
      Today's weather was perfect.
Woke up this morning to the tub of small fry left over from the the Big Pond pull that went so late we didn't have time to pick over the tinies.
My stepson, Brendan, was glad to help me sort them out so that by the time John Clark came to pull the Lower Pond, we had sorted out yesterdays leavings. John will get back to me with the numbers tomorrow, but estimating two hundred fifty newborns including eighty-something blue ki shusui == some with ki! yes. This was the second cut (cull) of the 750 I couldn't choose from last year at this time.

So here are some photos in mixed order. Pix of everything in the remainder bin; looks kind of galactic.

Tub of young ones, one to three inches, about 200 all for John.

About 80 ki shusui that were also in the tub with the littles.

And while I kept most of the ki shusui from the remains of the pull, i found I was able to give many to john.
It's easier to cull when it means "rehome."

i took photos of some individuals, not all. because late Today we pulled the Lower Pond, where the F2s live. More on that pull later.
Now, the remains of the day.

      Pix now.

Always nice to see the fruits of your labor in the fall. If you had more room/ponds I would say try and work on that Ki Asagi as well as it has a great appeal too.

      Last word tonight...

The Lower Pond seems to have settled, perhaps into the bat cave underneath!
I say this because we started draining it at 6:30 a.m. and it was still too deep at 3:00 for john to get the nets in.
By four, we were done for the day.
We pulled 83 ki shusui from the Lower Pond and they are jumbo. No question fish get bigger when they're not competing for essential needs.

We kept a dozen or so out for individual photos, returned the others by water-slide.
Got to tell you, seeing those giant ki shusui in one tank was a peak experience.
As soon as I have pix tomorrow, I'll post and enter the grow-out comp.

      More soon!

The Much Anticipated (by humble breeder) KiShusui Harvest!

      Team Ki,

We pulled the Lower Pond yesterday, 10/10/19, long awaited event by This pond has a nice green blanket of duckweed covering 90% of the surface so I haven't been getting any real views of the koi! Last October, we winnowed approx 250 residents down to about 90. (135 gals of flow through well water) and added in 3 F1 big girls as a back-cross opportunity for young males in case anyone was feeling sexy. Seems like no one was!

F3 is still in the future. Bindi-san once told me, "By F3 you'll have ki shusui coming out of your ears."

So these ki shusui are F2. We are not there yet.
      Pictures now.

1st set, Tub of 83 KiShusui.
2nd set, returning most to the Lower Pond by way of slippy slide.
3rd set, finalists to have pictures taken, and entries for grow-out comp.

We'll be measuring and sexing about 15 of the best in next post.

Fifteen representative ki shusui measured and just snapped. :)

Representative 2.5 y.o. F2, ki shusui from the Lower Pond.
Except for the small ones for the grow-out, think they are 3-4 inches longer than their sibs that have been housed in the Big Pond.

All fishes from the lower pond have been returned with this admonition from John Clark.
"Don't feed the fish for at least a couple of days.

I am often asked "How many fish do you have in the Big Pond?"

      I never really know.
But here are how many fish were rehomed from the Big Pond.
Counting the tub of jelly beans (541) and large fish over 12" (191) = 732
Rehomed from Turtle Bay = 115
None were rehomed from the Lower Pond.

Dave, friend and official tabulator, counts 264 koi in the Big Pond. 0 in Turtle Bay, and 83 in the Lower Pond.
We cannot swear we netted every fish.

      --- Breaking News ---
John just phoned and thinks in two weeks he may be ready to pull the Learning Curve Pond.
      I'll keep you all posted.

With thanks to John Clark, Sean, Monty, Brendan, Heather for the heavy lifting, and to Koiphen and Team Ki for your support since 2008!!.
