1 or 2 Tancho Kohakus. The weaker one of the two, but you never know. Sure gets away from the camera fast...

Both these tancho are stressed out about the move... sorry dude, new digs will be way cool!

3 or 3 Chagois. This one is mostly brown with a gray stripe around his tail end and sprinkling of gray on the face.

2 of 2 Tancho Kohaku. This one looks better today, but you never know how this is going to end up. This one is also showing a bit of shock over moving day.

Finally we have a group shot in their new digs. Sorry it's not the best, hard to get fry pictures at 3' depth. Lots of new things for them to explore, I just hope it's not the SC...

Nice batch of babies - This is a newbie question - do you know if the tanchos will maintain the expected color pattern?

Nope, don't know. Both tanchos are a total gamble at this age. As they get older the odds get better, but nothing is for certain at this size. Doesn't stop me from trying though.

As of this morning the two tanchos are in the SC and the other 5 fry are still in the tank.

It's okay if the tanchos are in the SC, really it is. They can't get into trouble in there. It's kinda like their own private club house.

These guys are having a ball in the new tank. I checked in on them mid day yesterday and I had 4 in the SC... then at evening feeding time I just had one tancho in the SC... This morning all 7 are in the tank and after the food!

Because of the aerated BD the food goes to the ends of the tank, then center under the return, and then water from the return randomly sinks the pellets 6 inches or so. When the food sinks the fry strike for it. Funny to watch.

I forgot to mention I switched them to Hikari Gold mini pellets. They seem to like it and they all can handle the very mini size. I still have blood worms left, it's just they make a big mess in the aquarium.

I did stand and watch for a few minutes this morning... they are totally playing follow the leader, circle the air column, and not my favorite is... whats in the pipes?

I won't be able to check in on them for a couple weeks, but I think all will be fine.

Just curious what would be your guess on the parent stock of the two Tancho Kohaku? I honestly have no clue but know that it could be MoJo...

Yea, the chagoi really took off once in the new QT... Actually I think they all grow quite a bit in there. Maybe it's all the air, been reading positive results with high oxygen levels...

I was in the QT today with net, bowl, and cameria... so figured some update shots were in order.

I'll keep pictures to one fish per post. For the curious, the sharpie marks on the bowl are 1 inch apart. Color is faded due to cooler weather and QT being outside...

This is my Chagoi, the largest of the bunch.

This is my Soragoi who seems to have joined the Ochiba Shigure ranks. The blue is much deeper than his hatching brothers, so maybe he will be Soragoi yet...

This is my remaining Tancho Kohaku, I lost the other one down the drain (Literally).

It's not the best Tancho, but it is an interesting one. The Tancho mark is pink in color, nearly square, and one eye is red.

It's been asked how I got them so fat. Basic answer is I feed them. Twice a day, every day. Mixed hikari gold (mini pellets) and blackwater gold (medium pellets) when the temp was higher. I switched to hikari wheat germ (mini pellets) when it got colder.

The answer has something to do with my new QT which has lots of air and some weird water currents (build thread can be found in construction). I have a 3" aerated BD which lifts the center of the tank and pushes the surface out to the edges, at the edge water current goes down the walls of the tank, hits the bottom and sweeps toward the BD. The tank is rectangular and I also have a return at each end of the tank. I almost have to have a picture.

So what happens is the food floats to the end of the tank and then goes under the return. The water from the return temporary submerges the pellets which go down at an angle toward the center of the tank and then they arch back up to the surface. The Koi get into this stream of food and have a game of who gets the pellets as they are submerged.

So I think they are eating more than they normally would because the pellet food is now a moving target, much like a bug would be moving in nature. Could also be my O2 level at saturation is helping...

      Brad

Edit: Here is the QT build thread... https://www.koiphen.com/forums/showthread.php?t=101648
