I don't think it would be harder to clean, just pick them up. This is how i think about this.
Koi need a place to hide if frightened or scared
Think about it: if you lived in a house with no furniture or anything, just plain walls and floor, it would eventually drive you crazy wouldn't it?
that is what i think about it.
Good thing I've been busy, because now I'm confused...
Okay I haven't done a thing after I removed the rock... well except another water change and lots of food... Seems I need a 25% water change every other day, food (blood worms) is three times a day.
I guess they are okay the way they are. They come to the corner closest to my computer and wiggle their little tails when I start talking to them.

Gosh darn it. Somehow my largest Ochiba, all of 4 inches, has a good sized scratch on his/her right side. I have no idea how that happened.
I added some Microbe-lift aqua x-treme (conditioner + slime coat) and am watching for now. Poor little guy.
I tried to picture the wound, but the ochiba wasn't cooperating.

You could well be right. I sure can't find what he many have gotten scratched on and I am dealing with more load than these little filters can handle. I'm up to doing daily water changes now.
I'm also trying to get my QT going. It's in process, another week or maybe two. Then I can move the two bigger guys to the QT and keep the small guys in the office aquarium.
Thanks

Some new snaps of my bunch. I switch to water changes every day and added some KoiZyme and now the scratch/ulcer is almost gone. The second shot, largest Ochiba more on top, shows what was the bad side.
They sure are hungry buggers. I'm feeding a good four finger pinch of blood worms 3 times a day plus sometimes giving them a dozen BWC gold pellets (medium sized). After the pellets soak a minute or two then poof... they are gone.

I have been building a QT and these guys will unfortunately have to be moved into it before it is cycled. It's a long story so I'll try and summarize.
I travel to Singapore Friday evening and will be gone 15 days. The fry are currently in a 40g aquarium in my home office which requires water changes every day. It requires sleping a 5g bucket back and forth, 3 trips out with old water and 3 in with new water. The fry are just way too much load for the filters. My wife can't lift the 5g bucket of water to the height of the tank, let alone 3 reps each day. So if they stay inside they will most assuredly die from bad water before I return.
So the best I can do, besides cross my fingers, is get the chemistry on the new QT about right, add salt enough for nitrite, and have sweetie dose with chloramX while I'm gone. It's not what you like to do with fry or a new QT, but I don't have much in the way of options here.
So at some point, either tomorrow or Thursday, I'll be pulling them from the office 40g tank and moving them to the new 500g QT. I'm feeling a bit harried about this. Anyway, I'll bowl and picture them when I move them.

You are going to need to install some kind of screen around the BD cover or else they will end up in the SC.
I think as long as you tell your wife to go easy on the feeding (once a day) you will be okay.

Yup. Been thinking about that. Not sure I can prevent it. I have a big range in size between the 2 tanchos and the rest of the fry.
It's okay if 2 or 3 travel to the SC. I do hope they make the trip without bruises. They would be better in the SC than in the 40g tank without water changes for 2 weeks.
The office tank will have just a plecos, it should be fine being solo for 2 weeks without food.
A side note: One of my now 16" sankes is named "Piper" for a reason. When he was less than 12" he was always down in my BD pipes or the SC until I started doing a water change. Sure glad he out grew that, he drove me nuts for quite some time.

Okay I got my new QT up and running, not cycled yet, but it's running.
I fiddled with the water chemistry and got it within reason. The water was salted for nitrites and Sweetie will be dosing with ClorAm-X while I am gone.
While I was catching I took a few glamor shots of each one of my fry babies. I'll try and keep all pictures for a given fry to the same post. There is no particular order here other than the order I caught them in...
Here is my largest fry and my only Chagoi.

1 of 3 Ochibas. I like the round spots on this one.

2 of 3 Ochibas. This one has more of a larger brown area to his pattern, maybe a 50/50 mix. Time will tell.
