Great looking box turtle home. Did you put anything under the landscape timbers to keep her from digging out?

      thanks

I've got 6 inches of acrylic and cement buried all around the perimeter of the enclosure. Their is also an overhang on top of the timbers.

So I've been getting Annabelle ready to move outside from her winter home when I checked on her, only to find at least one egg has just been laid.

Now in talking with her former owner who kept her alone in a basement, Annabelle hasn't been with a man in at least 6 years!

I've done some research and have learned box turtles can retain sperm for 4 or 5 years in documented cases. I'm guessing that these egg/eggs will be infertile but I'm going to give it some time and see what happens.

      Wish me luck

How long does it take for eggs to hatch? Should we be on baby watch?

Well no one told me mama could be a predator but she ate her own egg so I guess that's that.

Oh NO! I was looking forward to the chance it may hatch. Oh well.

Jeff, I didn't know you had box turtles too! What a great idea for a habitat for them, It looks great. I have a pair that I rescued, I think they are from Arkansas. I love you ideas, and I think I am going to steal a few. More likely I will clone yours. Thanks for posting pics. I am impressed!!!

Usuily when they eat the eggs it means they were infertile. I am also in NJ and I take mine in during the winter. I have not been able to get my boxies to lay eggs yet though. But last year I hatched 4 painted turtles.

I had 4 box turtles that lived in my backyard for 16-years. I fenced in a large area where bushes and such were. Then, last year, a racoon came and ate them all. It broke my heart. Make sure you cover your new enclosure, or it could happen to you too.
