I'm a novice breeder, at best, but have managed to rear a couple hundre doitsu sanke fry recently. Of the hundreds (sometimes thousands) of "multi-colored" fry, particularly those with hi, only a few percent make the cut, and MIGHT look half as good as their parents.
That said, it got me thinking about breeding ogon. I've never done it, but assuming pure bloodlines of say, yamabuki x yamabuki, and nothing else, wouldn't you get a much higher number of koi that make the cut? The marking (in this case, the solid color) is almost a given, and the culls will mostly be with regards to poor shape, abnormalities, and other defects.
So, the question is whether it's easier to breed quality ogon instead of colored koi.
