My pond spawned two weeks ago at the new moon and a cold snap. Half a lunar cycle later and more cool weather, yesterday, they did it again. They usually play chase for a day or two before business.

The first go around a Bekko girl Joe White gave me started things off and then everyone joined in. It took a week of water changes to get the foam out (Not quite as big a mess this time around). We took some eggs in from the first time and put them in a 20 gallon aquarium with a few plants and a sponge filter. Many hatched in three days (we removed the spoiling eggs mass after about 5 days). They are now 15 dpf and developing proper fins and adding black to their early yellow. It is really amazing to watch them, especially through a magnifying glass. Iíve been feeding them artificial rotifers 8 times a day, soon as it hits the water the herd gathers.

success Stephen... trick is to keep them alive. Back off on the fry powder. You see the white stuff floating in the water, overfeed, bacteria, will kill your fry in a heartbeat. Flush more, turn down the air, its to much for them and those tanks need to be shaded, full sun will heat up to 90 and kill the fry. Fry must have super clean water, bacteria sets in overfeed water and its to late to save them. Are you feeding brine shrimp also, easy if have right set up to grow them, aes has them? Good luck... Was that the shiro utsuri spawning? On to the sanke, showa spawning...

Gotta be careful with the fry. They are so delicate. Too much areation can kill them by the turbulance. Need to keep the water clean constantly. You gotta lot of work ahead of you. Try frozen baby brine shrimp if you are not making your own. It works great.

Hey Dan:punk1::punk1: I run a flow thru on most everything. If I don't, I do huge daily water changes. Current water temps in the Q facilities are 66-70 degrees. I have covers for all tanks.

Currently I am feeding them OSI microencapsulated larval feed - rotifer replacement. I also have a brine shrimp hatcher but need to set it up. Lots of food:yes:

I usually shut the air off during the day and turn it on at nite. I will turn it down some. Thanks:cool3:

That particular 4000 gallon tank is my main quarantine facility. Since I don't have any fish in it, I just left it filled with water for the last month or so.. The sun and nature did the rest. The water is green and filled with life. The 4 tanks at the swamp site are filled with mud pond water and have a lot of goodies too.:yahoo:

I was hoping to raise some fry this season too, and wanted to make sure the water contained lots of natural food. But my fry tanks would be in an indoor room, so I wonder if I could even expect any of that stuff to colonize naturally. All I need to do is add artificial light and of course the algae will grow. But would rotifers etc. colonize the tank if it's not outside?

Municipal water supply fry herds- The fry in my 4000 gallon Q tank get a lot of sun, massive water changes and are doing very good. The ones in the 700 gallon tub got much less sun and water changes. They are runts and were moved to the q tank today.

Mud water tanks fry herds - These 4 tanks get a lot of sun but not as much water change as the fry above. They appear huge in comparison. That surprises me and I don't have any explanations. Aeration is equal in all tanks.

Just sharing:cool3:

It's not the water changes that make the difference. In Japan they stick them in the mud and leave them until they cull them and then they put them back in the same water. JMHO

I haven't really given them much attention except for food. Thanks. I am new at this but plan on learning fast:D: The water is supreme. Continuous flow thru 24/7. They have food available at all times. Mostly feeding crushed frozen bloodworms, all they want $116.60 per Kilo :eek1:, $53 pound:gack: 70% protein.
:eek1:......70%.....
Frozen bloodworms and dried Krill are among their favorite food indeed. also, good grade of Spirulina powder has very good nutrition and high protein.

Yep. Mojo was definitely horny during the full moon period:punk1:
It is said that a heritability of the Ginrin scales is very strong so that pro-breeders have transmitted Ginrin to all variety of koi.
and in order to get Ginrin scale offspring, it is not necessary to use both of Ginrin parental koi but one of a pair, either female or male, works well. So, if eggs of the Ginrin Ochiba -Mojo- were successfully fertilized, you could find, not all but a quite lot of, ginrin scaled offspring among the fry/baby..........

They range from .75 inch to well over 2 inches. I would guess the medium length at about 1.5 inch. I removed 41 tobies a while back and put them in a cage. I haven't really given them much attention except for food. I am afraid that when I pull the cage out to observe, there will be only 1 40.25 inch toby left:eek1::eek1::eek1::eek1: Where is Minime when you need him:confused::confused:

After 40 days of heavy feeding I decided to drain down the main q tank and vacuum the bottom. Since I will be placing most of the fry in new water, I want to match the water temp and pH. An interesting discovery, the pH in the 7 ft deep q tank is 8.25 towards the top and 7.24 towards the bottom. The fish are extremely healthy but I thought that was interesting. The water comes out of the tap at pH 7.46, so I will aerate it to increase the pH before placing any fish in it and allow the temps to equalize. I learned this is very dangerous back in my younger days. I must of killed 10,000 fry doing this one day.:eek1:

Not to worry tho:cool3:

Remember that UPS commercial with these guys huddled over a computer because their website just launched. There was a counter on the number of orders. After the first one they cheered. Second, third and so on. Once it hit 100 or so they stopped cheering and as it continued to climb, they just stared blankly at the screen...like oh-oh.

Are you still cheering or staring blankly at the pond :D:

Stephen how big do you let your fry get before switching to the blood worms mix? I am varying in the 3/4" - 1/4" area right now. I am running out of the powder mix, and was thinking about pounding up some Gold pellets into dust and using it. I also want to try the blood worms, b/c yours are growing so dang fast! I will try and get some pictures today.

Crushing gold is good. The bigger they get, the less you crush. They are about ready for crushed blood worms as well.

As far as I can tell there are only yellow fry (go sanke or ogons???) and brownish color (chagoi/soragoi/ochibas) The parrot grass is bubbling like crazy with air from photosynthesis so I don't think O2 levels are going to be a problem and they are getting about a 200% water change everyday from a flow through system. As they get older I will be removing the parrot grass and adding aeration. Right now the tanks walls are very thick with algae growth and the fry are still much bigger than the tadpoles, so I haven't noticed any fighting.

$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

I just made a little Blackwater Gold powder and mashed up blood worm combination, and man does that stuff stink!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I had to twist and gnarl the blood worms into a powder type consistency and could barely breath. Next time i am putting it into a food processor and skipping the manual labor ;)

I just moved all of the parrot weed into another 6' Deepwater Show Tank so that I will be ready for some more babies!!!!!:cheer::cheer::cheer:

Stephen how old are the fish in the last set of photos?
