I am not a koi breeder. But because of changes I have made in my filter system I got a spawn that survived this year. They grew up in the filter and I let them stay there until I had to clean it.

I moved them to a growout tank and here are some pictures.

I am planning on keeping them in the growout tank and heating it in the winter via my hot tub.

I think they look pretty good! Do you know when they were born and who the parents might be? Allot of the dark ones look like Ochibas to me. You must have a Chagoi and a Soragoi in your pond. What kind of filter setup do you have? Post photos of it.

I have lots of pictures of my filtration - hit the links in my signature for some of them.

But here is where I found the babies:

My two bottom drains and skimmer are piped to this collecting tank. Gravity brings the water in. From here the water passes through two 410 Answers and is pumped throughout my system. The babies were able to survive the 4000 gal/hr current in about 210 gallons of water. They were swimming constantly to survive. But many of them did, and you see them in the pictures. From the time I removed them, there have only been about 50 deaths (and two fish eating fish (tobies?) were removed and fed to the turtle).

Oh yeah, the parents....

I have one chagoi, very dark almost black. And one karasu, of course black with red on the belly. Both of them are male. I have no idea who the female could be, perhaps a gin lin lemon ogon. All my other females are white or kohaku or shoro utsuri.

The dark chagoi has perfectly layed out scales, but no detectable matsuba patern - maybe because he is to dark to see the pattern. But I wonder if he isn't the father.

I'm a little baffled as to who the parents could be, but I do hope to see how these fish turn out.

The suspect parents are in this photo:
