I'm late to the party, I know! The back story is this: Another Torontonian and I agreed to share S&H. Then, we found someone in NY State who agreed to go in with us, so we decided to ship everything to him then we would drive down and bring the koi across the border.

The other Torontonian backed out, and the "host" very generously offered me the use of his QT facilities, so I left the koi with him for a while. One thing led to another and I didn't make it down there until today.

Well, here they are, just out of a very long QT:

The "host" and I both went with random selection, then he was very kind and offered me my choice out of the five we ordered. I tried my best to rate them from 1 to 5 in desirability and selected 1 and 3.

Why did I take #1 for myself? Well, I am reminded of a story:

Two gentlemen are having dinner together, and when it comes time to order their after-dinner cognac, the waiter apologizes, but there's only one more serving of the superb L’Espirit de Courvoisier left, one of them gets it and the other must make do with the XO Imperial.

The waiter turns to the first fellow and asks him what he would like. He orders L’Espirit de Courvoisier, and the second fellow is left to settle for the XO. The waiter moves off, and after a silence the second fellow speaks up. "Ashley," he says, "I'm surprised, almost nonplussed. I have always know you to be a gentleman of the strictest standards, a chevalier."

"Yet," the second fellow continues, "You ordered the L’Espirit de Courvoisier for yourself, leaving me the XO Imperial. I ask you, Ashely, how you see this?"

Ashley reflects for a moment as he warms his cigar. "Fotheringham, you and I have been friends for ages. You come from a family the flood couldn't wash away. Tell me man-to-man, had the waiter spoken to you first, would you have ordered the XO Imperial for yourself, leaving the ’Espirit de Courvoisier for me?"

Fotheringham nods. "Of course, old friend, what else?"

Ashley nods as well. "No truer friend has ever walked the Earth. You tell me, had you been offered the choice, you would have selected the XO Imperial."

"Well," Ashley continues, "Now you have it!"

Cute story and nice SUs Reg. Looking forward to seeing these two in a few months... I seem to recall you have a hot house for over wintering, or am I mistaken again.

No hot house, but last year I put up a passive solar greenhouse and this year I'll do it again. You still get Winter, but it lengthens the fall by 4-6 weeks and hastens Spring by about the same amount.

Some folks up here use two separate layers of greenhouse poly separated by air under pressure, then heat the pond. Nice!
