My only complaint is the measuring technique. If you are using a standard round show bowl, how do you get the koi to line up with a measurement at zero?? I take lots of koi pics...and this is really going to be a problem for most people. I would definitely recommend the honor system for measuring.
Susan Reed

We need the picture of the entry to be taken in a blue tub regardless! At lease with the measurement marks in the tub it should give us a close idea of the size of the fish.
All we ask is you do the best you can!

It will take up to much space if we display 2, 3 or more pictures of the same fish. One photo should be good so when you take it make sure you get the best possible shot. That's why we said to take from nose looking at you to back from the top of the fish. Here are some examples to show you what I mean. Also it would not be a bad idea to send 2, one with size and one good one for the judge.

Susan, nice job on the new page for the Virtual show.
One question: you would like the fish in the picture to have it's head at zero.
The container I use for measurements is the correct color blue, but is not an official measuring tub, much less expensive, and I have marked the inch and half inch increments but not numbered, I just figure it out by counting the inches and half inches. Will this work for virtual show?

I did a bunch of my photography today...it was brutal!!! Took about 4hrs. My pond is 16,000gal and catching them is never easy...used a seine net to help. A few questions. Besides the photo with the measurements...how many pics can we enter for each fish? Will 2-3 photos per koi help the judges get a more accurate representation of each fish? I think it would actually make the judges job easier and more accurate. They can better decide what is inherent to the koi and what is a problem with the photography. A piece of dirt can look like a shimi or a wave can make the conformation look distorted. Multiple pictures can help resolve these types of issues.

Brutuscz, due to space we only require 1 picture of each but if you like send you can send 3 pictures per fish. Our benching committee will choose the best out of those 3. No to your other question, 1 picture per fish please.

I'll make the call on this and say "Nose to end of tail"
I'll make the call on this and say "Nose to end of tail"
That may be a little more difficult and may cause some fin damage.
Standard practice for lonf fin I believe is nose to tail start.
Just sayin'

If you hold the fish close to the side of the measuring tub you should be able to get a good measurement without doing any damage to their fins.

Being the Chairman of this show I made the call so we will go from Nose to end of Tail. Just be-careful on how you hold her to make sure you do not damage the fins...you can also put the measurements on the bottom of the tub and get your measurement that way without touching her.

One question I still don't know the answer to "for sure"! You say send ONE PHOTO per e-mail. Wouldn't you want the "size photo" and the "glamour photo" of each fish in a single e-mail?

I have a question - I just bowled some fish and took pics. Problem is in trying to get a pic with them pointing the right way, parallel to the measurement marks and at the "0" mark, and displaying the perfect top view shot all at the same time. Can we submit a measurement pic separate from the judging/display pic? Anyone have any solutions?

Are you using a flat net? We use a reg. net to get them to the top then remove them with a sock net..No problems:no:

Me too! How do those dealers get those perfect "koi show portraits"?
You know - with the pecs perfectly posed and the water surface perfectly flat in the bowl? I can't get them to keep still. Must be boy koi!:D:
Also when the backs are above the water line - the reds end up different than under the water, much brighter in the pic, especially if the sun is on it.
Should we post some of the pics on the forum or save it for the show?

what happens when you spin around a few times, you get dizzy? Same with fish, thats when you get that great shot from a camera. So have someone spin fish around in bowl and you be ready to shoot with camera.
We should have a tutorial on photoing koi in a bowl. Do we have anything like that already?
Joey S
10-27-2008, 12:05 PM
I think Bart gave some pointers once. The big problem is the delay with a digital camera. Unless you 'lead' the shot, you miss the good ones. Even with a cloudy day, we still had lots of glare. You need a real camera with a polarizing lense.

This show itself will be a great learning tool for some of you beginners and some who have shown but never bowled and measured! I hope that we can have more who have done this to give their thoughts and hints on how to do this process!
I know when we were in Greenville, I had Brady take the picture of our Sanke. He took time and waited on that koi to get the right picture. All I can say is Patience is the key in getting a good picture.
Brady Brandwood
10-27-2008, 12:43 PM
Yes definitely, patience is key, and keeping a calm, low stress environment, so the Koi will relax and swim casually, rather than darting around like in a flight response. Using a square or rectangular tub helps too, so the Koi doesn't swim around in circles. If you have glare on the water, you can use a black card above the fish, and use the camera's flash. Also, keeping the water level a few inches above the Koi will help eliminate ripples and splashes in the pic.
Sit calmly and wait for the right pose to come to you.
Best Wishes,
Brady

For me it is patiance and taking a ton of pictures! Also make sure you have the flash on and set the shutter speed as fast as possible. This will keep your photos from being burry. If it is cloudy, bring them under cover to keep the glare down. If it is a clear blue sky then you will be better off outdoors.
As for the fish jumping out of the net...You can usually tell which fish are going to jump a head of time. If they are skiddish and start to back up, then watch out b/c they are about to jump. Just stay calm, move slowly, and use as big of a net as you can. I still use my 31" net on fish that are 4-5".
Good luck everyone,
Zac

I will try again. For my jumper I will try a regular net, if I can get him into it. If not, it's not worth hurting it for a show (DW chastised me for endangering the fish for my ego). But it's not really about ego - it is a learning opportunity:yes:

Sorry hon, I have been very busy this weekend. I'm working on getting all the entries grouped and ready for the judging. We will have the tanks open for viewing sometime in the next 2 weeks. Susan, I don't know who is helping with posting the fish in the show tanks but I was wondering if they could make the fish bigger by cropping or ???
There are some nice fish but the fish in the picture is so small that it is hard to tell about markings, etc.
I imagine some are larger because that is the way they were submitted but for the judges to see the fish fairly, shouldn't they all be that way.
Not complaining, you are doing a great job, just suggestions.
At this time are tanks #29, 30, 31 and 32 empty because I could not get any picture to come up in those?

Doing a great job with the show so far !!
Of all the people I know locally that show koi, each of them have within their collection a complete mutt koi which they dearly love, would never part with, but also would never be able to compete with it.
Got me thinking --- wouldn't it be neat to have a different "redneck koi" category each year? A general description would be made up in lay terms of what is most desirable / least desirable for that year's redneck category, and people could enter whatever fish they wanted. The judges read the description and make their judgements based on how they interpret the description.
The key to making this a fun category is to have the desirable traits to be something that many different types of koi could have. Below are just some ideas off the top of my head, I bet if this became a real possibility for the show, the creative minds here at Koiphen could come up with some real screamers.
"Recognizable Pattern"
The koi exhibits a pattern or spot which looks like something, and the owner submits a short explanation of what the pattern is. Example - saw a message a week or so ago about a tancho showa, and the head pattern looked like the outline of the state of Iowa. Or possibly a splotch would look like a UFO.
"Super Tanker Mutt Monster"
The koi must be considered by the judges to be un-showable, or atleast a longshot for winning a conventional category at a koi show. The longest length (including fins) wins. If there are 2 koi which appear to be the same length, then the one with the least desirable show traits wins.
"Sneezer"
Any koi with a pattern which looks like the owner was drinking paint, and accidentally sneezed all over the koi. The favored trait is the most number of individual unconnected spots shown in a single photograph.
"Box of Crayons, In the Dryer"
As if your koi was put in a clothes dryer with a box of crayons, and every color in the box got it's turn making a mark on your koi. Preferred is the koi with the greatest diversity in color shown in a single photograph. The colors don't have to be spots or patterns, they can be smeared colors.
"Mutt Grow Out Contest"
Entrants are to acquire a new koi from any source, with a purchase price of $20 or less, with a body length of 6" or less overall including fins. Koi born from the owner's spawns are considered free. A photograph is submitted for that year's show, and then the entrants submit a photograph in the next annual show. The longest koi (length including fins) is the winner. If two appear to the be the same size, the one with the least desirable show pattern wins.
Thanks

just looked through the varieties.
love how you did it to show people how a sanke or any other variety can be different "looks".
but something i noticed(believe me would not want the job of sorting)
but also depends how the owner wanted them entered
hikari muji-koi #245 would they want as a longfin?
also something interesting is having a doitsu class and then wondering about in the hakari moyo variety koi 259 and 330.they would fit in both.did the owner choose what variety class they wanted in or was all doitsu suppose to be in doitsu class?
i think there are a bunch of koi missing from size class also.

Just like any other show...gotta wait on the judges to do their thing. Ribbons will be placed on the tanks...winners will be announced...I'm sure folks will be talkin' up their favorites...time to start thinking about the people's choice awards.

Will we be able to view all competitors by class so that we can see the competition side by side?

No. It will be like at a normal live show, the fish will be in their tank for viewing, and if you want to compare, you have to do the walking. :harhar:

Yes. We intend to continue to improve the interface every year, and I think it would be great if we could have a "side by side" viewing option.
