On the morning of May 31st, I had two females spawn. Since I had no more room to separate the koi, I just let it go naturally. One was a 3 year old 24" GinRin Chagoi (also have a male) which I purchased from Sugar Loaf Koi in Sept. 2005. The other female is a 2 year old 19" Showa I purchased from Lee at Thekoifarm.com in June 2006. The Showa had allot more black but within 30 days of putting it in my pond the black faded. Next year I'll separate the pair of GinRin Chagois. Well at least now I know who the males are in my pond!

The morning of June 1st I had two more females spawn. Both are just pond grade koi from the dealer who installed my pond. The first is a 3 year old 28" very dark Ochiba I think. It was all black when it was 2" long and free. The dealer was giving away fry each time you came to his store. So my wife and I got ten that season, we kept a few and sold the rest. The second is a 3 year old 21" Kohaku.

The morning of June 3rd, two more females spawned. The first is a 2 year old 20" Yamabuki. I don't remember where I bought this one. The second is a 3 year old 24" Kujaku, I purchased from Sugar Loaf Koi.

LOL I am kinda impatient. But I was looking at all those lovely fish thinking WOW! I bet they make nice babies. For some reason the intro just sounded like" Let me show you what I got from that".
Are all those rocks hard on the females when they spawn like that?

Here are photos of some of the fry. The photos showing the fry in the pond were taken on 6/29. The white bucket on 7/13 and the red bucket 12:30 am today. I haven't done anything for these fry until this past week, I started feeding them 55% protein feed. It's very small pellets and it sinks. The only trouble is the big guys also go after this feed. So I feed them at the same time. I think there must be 200 assorted fry in my pond. I guess I'll be catching these fry before winter sets in!!

The big black one which I think is a Ochiba lost a few scales near her tail.

Don't be, now you can see photos of the fry. I don't know what I'll end up with until I catch them later in the fall. By then my tanks in the cellar will be empty and I'll move them into their new living quarters for the winter. I didn't have any problems with the rocks. But as you can see there were 6 to 10 males chasing each female.

Today there were still a bunch of fry in my pond! The water level wasn't all the way to the top, so I drained it again. Got in there with a home made sieve net and caught 24 more. Now the total of fry is 260. Going to sort them out tonight. I'll post more photos soon. I don't think any fry are left in the pond.

Today Barb and I sorted out the fry in the 300 gallon tank which has the 3 to 5" fry. We moved 33 fry into a 150 gallon tank. I haven't seen any damaged or distorted fins on any of these fry. They are being feed 50% protein 2mm slow sinking pellets five times a day. We can't wait to see how they will develope as they grow bigger!!

Greg Stienstra
09-01-2008, 07:47 PM
Here are photos of the 120 fry remaining in the 300 gallon tank. They look so much better in a blue tub. Also have about 95 2 to 3" fry in two 100 gallon tanks.

Greg Stienstra

Looking good, why do you have the water level so low?

Because it's easier to catch them when the water is low. Plus I was changing out the water. The 50% protein feed turns the water brown in 2 days. In the 100 gallon tanks the water turns brown in less than 24 hours. I turn the pumps off when I feed them so the feed doesn't get sucked into the filters.

My friend Lee Menszak ( www.thekoifarm.com ) came over today and helped me sort out some more fry. He discovered that these fry came from a later spawn ( not 5/31, 6/1 & 6/3). These are the best of which I plan to keep. There are 2 Sanke standard fin. Of the butterflies there are 2 Yamabuki Ogons (Matsuba mix in 1), 1 Kohaku and not sure of the last one.

I would still consider them fry. All except photos 4,5 and 10 were born the first week of June and are 3.5 to 4.5" long. Photo 4 Sanke, photo 5 Kohaku butterfly and photo 10 ( not sure what it is) are from a later spawn that I didnt see happen and are 2.5" long. They are being fed 50% protein 2mm pellets right now. But it turns the water brown real fast.

Allot of the fry in post 48 I'll keep to see how they turn out. I have 260 fry in tanks down cellar. There are about 20 still in my pond that I couldn't catch. I'll sell most of them. I have a sign at the end of my driveway. I list them on craigslist.com. It's too late this year, but in the spring I'll sell them wholesale to a local garden center. Saturday I sold 5 14" Platinum Ogon butterflies from last years spawn to a man from Morristown, NJ. He saw my ad on craigslist.

Greg, are you keeping your fry in those 5 indoor tanks until May? i've got 14 fry, 3/4" to 2" range, in one 100 gallon tank. Just realized i'm looking at 8 months of indoor koi-keeping. Am I going to have to upgrade tank size? Hoping, 'no.'

Of the 250 fry in my cellar I think 50 or so have potential. So I'm thinking of setting up two 150 gallon stock tanks in the equipment room in my garage. No bottom drains. Just a submersible pump and small pressurized filter. The water temperature will stay around 48 to 50 degrees and I won't need to feed them. I'll put a 100 in each tank. I have a garden center that'll buy them in the spring. Then I'll have allot of room to spare for the 50 with potential down cellar.

Your 100 gallon tank will be just fine for 14 fry.
PS I'll be looking over your plans this week Maxine.

They're doing great. Went into old pond straight from QT after the GR Chagois did the nasty spawning act in my QT tank. My well was being chlorinated that week so I couldn't change water. The old pond was empty as we retro fitted it with BD and new filter, so at least I had some place to move them Was hoping to geth them into the new pond, but they'll have to wait till spring now. Not sure how big they are, probably 8-10". will know for sure when we pull them in the spring. Joanne

Took photos of 9 more fry tonight. They are all 4" long. These were from tank #2 which had the smaller fry under 3'". I was getting too many keepers in tank #4 ( would have been 64). So I moved tank #1 into tank #2, 69 small fry (culls) total. The 18 butterflies from tank #3 went into tank #1. Tank #3 (100 gal) and tank #4 (150 gal) will be for the fry of interest (keepers). So I have 20 of the 4" size in tank #3, all have been photographed. 44 in tank #4, most have been photographed. There are 99 in tank #5 (300 gal) some of which may be of interest as they grow.

Well, if we want to get really nit picky you could say the metallic fins make it a platinum, but the rest of the body is matte colored. The head is also not metallic. Plus it's a doitsu. This is what it's supposed to look like if it were a doitsu platinum.

What do you feed them? I bred my koi last fall (My female was full of eggs surprisingly) and have 2 survivors because my tank got too polluted and I didn't even get to cull them! Anyway, the largest is 1.25 inches and the other's maybe 1 inch. We suspect genetic problems because my female was only a year old. Also, due to budget problems, I couldn't really feed them food made for fry. All they got was egg yolk, algae wafers, crushed koi food, and crushed fish flakes, probably not the best for them. I tried to hatch brine shrimp but the water couldn't stay warm enough constantly so it didn't work. Just trying to get food ideas for this coming koi breeding season. :)

These fry were born the first week of June 2008. I have 247 down in my cellar and probally 20 or as in my pond that I couldn't catch. I didn't start feeding until they were about 1.5" long, there was plenty of natural food for them in the pond. Then I feed them 55% protein crumble feed from Ziegler Brothers. Then I switched to 1/16" 55% slow sinking pellets. Now they get 40% 3mm floating pellets. Normally koi don't breed until their 3rd year.

The pics of the spawn remind me of salmon for some reason.
