View Full Version : Daily Dose of Koi from Japan
Brian Drake

I am thinking of starting a post that displays daily a fresh image of koi from Japan.
Total fun and entertainment. In our archives we have thousands of images from Japan as I am sure other dealers have also...I will try to man this post and keep it going daily...but feel free to add a photo and share information...Gene, Matt and any other dealers, hobbyists feel free to put one up..Thanks for sharing everyone.
First photo is: three-year-old Yamabuki Ogons from Izumiya Koi farm. IMHO best Yamabuki Ogons made period. I will show you what they look like as two-year-olds...in the third year I recall they change into the darker yellow.

Curious Brian, What would a two year old girl like that run? Ballpark is fine. I'm sure I will never be w/o a yamabuki! Beautiful fish. I like your daily inspiration idea! Boa

Thanks...Depends how they were bought. If a dealer bought 100 of these then they might be Relatively inexpensive but not cheap... Depends on the quality and the rating of 100. If you wanted the top one..expensive..bottom one reasonable.

Karl: He has such beautiful koi....when I was there he hardly had anything like your photos...he did have a $60K Showa...remember the story...he was found to be talking to the judges at a local koi showm featuring this koi and others and he made it very clear to the judges that he didn't think it should be GC...so the judges awarded the Showa 2nd place...I found the reason to be Kase didn't want to have to buy dinner for all of the breeders at the show which comes with winning th GC at that particular show....when I was there he had just called us to come over and see the new Kumonryu he had seined from the mudpond by his house like in your pictures, This is the second spawn
of Kumonryu for Kase and they looked great coming out of the mudpond.

Mr. Ogata, is a very gracious, humble person with incredible hospitality, family and great koi. He took us to his 7 million gallon (or more) secret mud pond...I have posted that before here..but sounds like we need a new updated version...yes on Yamabukis. He buys them from the Niigata area. Luke: Buy it!!! Reminds me of the time (12 years ago) when we were seining a pond for Igarashi..packed 6 of us in one of these trucks flying through the mountains in Niigata...I'm shooting photos, hanging onto my baseball cap and recording the conversations going on...hysterically funny...we get there and we all felt like we just came out of a wind tunnel...pooped. Went down and seined a huge mudpond (acres) and one of the dealers at the time got to go into this mudpond..he gets ready to put his hands on this huge koi gets it and proceeds to throw the koi over his shoulder back into the netted seine area.
People on shore were cracking up...a new way of catching a koi?
He took it all in good fun...the next day and the next pond Mr. Mano of Dainichi made sure no more catching...just look. That year many huge expensive koi had alot of aeromonas on them. So I asked what would happen to these koi that are very sick...we'll use them as breeders. At that same mudopond seining I met Joel Zuritsky of Quality Koi and we had a great time talking and he mentioned what his dream was.
I still remember that day as if I was still there.

This is the Adoption board at the Koi Center. You pay a fee, ($100. to 500.) and then they take care of your koi for 3 years. Then you can take it if you want it after that time. Koi. Koi. And a wood pile near by!!

If I remember right all of those koi were purchased as a one unit price. Looked at every koi that size and the other dealer I believe bought them all while I was filming this. All of these koi are very good...look for the same things you look for in Kohaku...white skin and Kohaku pattern or this case Buddo Goromo...they also had Sumi Goromo which is the blacker verson and Aigoromo and Goshiki all in the same pond because that is what this breeder breeds when he isn't driving a taxicab.

Incredible fish. I have all but shorted out my keyboard drooling over some of these fish. Man, I don't know, but I'd be so upset to go over to Japan, fall in love with several (if I could limit myself) fish and not be able to afford them or afford to get them home. Wow is all I can say about some of these fish. Jeannie

Yes Kase...Jeanie go to Japan when u can...it will change the way you look at things especially koi, ponds, etc. Some folks besides dealers get in the habit of going every year in October for the harvest...ya gotta go in October.
No better place to be IMHO.

Brian, when you say very, very, very expensive, what price are you talking about. I have no idea what koi like this sell for. Just looking at pictures of koi of this caliber is a treat. I just can't imagine having a pond with several like this. I'd be so afraid something would happen to one of them. I enjoy my koi alot, but wow, these are incredible. Thanks for sharing these incredible pics with us. Jeannie

I love this thread too. I have to ask, Brian, or anyone who might know.....On page 14 of this thread, picture # 137, there is a group picture with a taupe colored koi featured......what variety is this? I love it. It's so quiet and understated; the perfect foil for the flashier fish. Is it in the chagoi/ochiba family?
Brian Drake
04-08-2007, 03:55 PM
The picture you asked about has three koi in it. They are called Ayabakes. Kind of like a Doitsu Shusui and Ochiba mixed into one. Only a few breeders in Japan breed these. They are unique and beautiful at the same time and as in the eyes of the beholder...

Yes...grasshopper.
Considering the money spent I'd hardly consider myself a bug. If that is the conception of my checkbook that boy has a lot to learn. And I was considering acquiring more from this breeder.
Respect. Consideration. Understanding. Given the current set of circumstances I would think a greater understanding of our concerns would be of great concern.

Did u ever watch Kung Fu...dialogue was always between student and master...great show...didn't mean any disrespect to you.
Charles Pearson
04-30-2007, 12:40 PM
Gotta say this here, that "Grasshopper" here is used in the most respectful way imaginable. Grasshopper (name chosen by the master) was the name for the young Kung Fu. Kung Fu was play by David Carradine. He cold walk on water so to speak. (of course David was young then, and not so fat, and he could act in those early years) In my eyes (very young) he was better than god. But then, along came John L. .......................
The master knew a lot of stuff, but he was blind as a bat!:D:

I know...I know...
I offered to play an KHA last week. The fish agreed. She had all the right features...great menware, hidden shiro that could be shown in the right environment, young and eager, potential for grow out. I had to turn the fish away because I heard the pond keeper had major problem.
Leg pulling could get me in a major trouble, fast too...Cheers!!!
